Good luck on your journey to becoming a developer! I LOL for real when I read thatt :) I've a respectable 12 years under my belt, and I know that pales in comparison to some of the more experienced members here :)

:) Truly sorry, it sounded like you were just getting going after being an admin, starting out with PHP and Ruby. My mistake, I don't want to denigrate anyone's experience - I'm only on my 6th year, after all!

 Don't be, its good to laugh at oneself :) And if you're already thinking about a startup then you must be worth your salt. Thinking about any articles for CP?

Really? I'm doing it "Locally" (server in the next room with a GB Network) and when I hit delete it takes a second or two to register.

That is strange. Are you sure there are no issues with the network at either end? Are you using VNC or NX? Is this through an SSH tunnel? Is it encrypted? All these would be unnecessary overheads if you're on a local network.

Possibly, I want to get more into the community, and I'm trying to on sites like http://answers.onstartups.com just for conversation... Once I have gotten somewhere with our project, I'll definitely consider it.

I was just pointing out that your chosen paradigm shift requires the very thing you're compaining about, i.e., manually editing config files. If you want the best of both worlds, you might consider shifting again to Mac OS X. (As one who hates Macs, I can't believe I just wrote that! )

I have no problem setting things on the server side, I mean, this is stuff that should be edited once in a blue moon and I'm OK with that. Its well documented and all and its not staggeringly difficult. Point me to where I could find a living doing this stuff and I'll send you a keg by mail, all expenses paid. My biggest issue is setting up the debugger for the IDE. As a programmer, I shouldn't have to mess with this stuff, I should be churning money making code with minimal downtime. If I have to waste days/weeks/months/years/eons to setup a development environment, the concept of time is money has been wrestled to the ground and been given a sound kicking to the kidneys.

I posted the 5 because I don't feel this deserved the 1 vote it got. To whomever gave the 1 vote, the OP's allowed his opinion and I agree that developers shouldn't have to struggle with setting up debuggers, it's a necessary tool of the trade.

Didn't really expect to get support from this thread  I'm using NX and I'm pretty sure it's not through a SSH tunnel or encrypted but I could be wrong. I'm actually going to be re-installing everything pretty soon (test system), so I'll be sure when I re-do it that it's not SSH and encrypted (even though as I said I"m about 99% sure that is already the case). Thank you!

Well, you're the lucky one :) I personally prefer VNC, you might want to give that a try too, though really it shouldn't matter all that much. Though VNC uses RDP, Microsoft's protocol.

Cheers :) Sometimes we question the methods of democracy. Frankly, I stopped caring a long time ago when someone downvotes me, it has happened often enough. But its just as nice when someone pops in out of the blue to counter balance, tells me that there are niceties left in this world. Thanks :)

Come back! Windows 7 is really nice. Stay away from VS 2010 though, unless you really enjoy coffee breaks!

Well stay away if you can... We are developing customer software where actually the customer gets all source code and a license for further developing on the project. Now, if MS only sells VS2010 we have no good argument to keep 2008 around, and we also do not want to explain to the customer that at the end of our development, we will upgrade the project from 2008 to 2010, making it essentially un-editable on our side. So the simple but effective deprecation of old versions leaves us no choice, and it´s the same with Win XP vs. Win 7, Server 2003 vs 2008 etc. We have sub-suppliers who still cannot confirm that their software will run smoothly on Win 7 / Server 2008, forcing us to make manual downgrades which are costly and leave much of the available power (64bit, huge memory) unused. On the other Hand, Windows 7 seems to be a big leap forward. It´s attitude towards the user is much more optimistic and the useability has really improved. Stay away from Office 2007 & 2010 dough :)
