Does VS really give you £700 more value than, say, SharpDevelop? Now they got the integrated debugger working over there I haven't really found anything it's missing out on (perhaps some ASP/web related things, I don't use .Net for my hobby websites).
Considering that C# and C++ Express are free, what additional does SharpDevelop give you that makes you want to use it?

You mean the VS Express? SharpDevelop loads much faster and uses much less memory, to the extent that on a former computer of mine VS wouldn't run at all. (VS is horrible bloatware that I would prefer to keep out of my personal life.) Also, I thought VS Express had licence restrictions on what you can do with stuff you make in it

You can get the Microsoft Action Pack Dev and Design for £300 + VAT, gives you 3 licences for MSDN including VS2010, plus 10 licences for Office/Win7 and 2 real licences for Server 2008 and SQL. :)

O.K. then the dissertation is written. Representations of prositution in the eighteenth century is ready to be sent of in January for marking. and I'm officially an expert in eighteenth century literature, well I suppose literature in general as even if I failed the masters I have already past the postgraduate. As usual with these things I think it's alright when I read it but fear that it might be a load of nonesensical rubbish when I happen to think about it. So in order to take my mind off it it's time to get my monies worth out of vs 2010 that I finally took the plunge and paid 700 quids for. It's expensive being a hobbiest these days still orders of magnitude cheaper than doing the Masters degree though. The plan at the moment is to learn wpf and finish version 1 of Personal Music Player which should take about a month or so.

In a word no But at the time the sharpdevelop debugger wasn't up to the job and it was getting in the way of my getting things working so it had to go.
