In Belgium we moved to the one that asked the least of our money (x € for this option, y € for that one, ...). They're all crappy in someway so the least you pay for it, the better.

Dear UK CPians, My bank sucks monkey [deleted] and blows back chunks. I've been with them for over 25 years but I have had enough of their incompetence. I won't go into how they've [deleted] up this time as I don't think that CP has the bandwidth. Suffice to say, I will be changing my bank as soon as I can sort out the current crap. Now for the question part. Which is the least suckity of the banks in the UK? Based on the hive mind, I'll probably go the other way. :-D

I bank with the Co-operative bank. I have been with them for some 20 years after I left a large bank who insisted on charging me for cashing cheques after their cash machine had eaten my card(their fault!) I know others who are with the Co-operative and we all seem to be happy with it. The part I like are the benefits - break-down cover, phone insurance(on something like 3+ phones) etc for £13 a month. P.s. I don't work for them.

If you are looking for a general current account, First Direct generally gets top marks in customer satisfaction polls.

I use Nationwide, more by inertia than any particular reason (although being a mutual, not a bank, gets it some ethical points in my book), but they're pretty good for what I've wanted to do. They've got a decent Internet interface as well which might be relevant if you're in Hungary half the time.

Yes - very low interest rates on current accounts.

The Missus and I used FirstDirect in the past but then they wanted to start charging us just for having the account, so we switched to cahoot, and have had absolutely no problems with them in 7 years. The banks with branches are always boasting about their customer service but in the last 20 years or so it has declined considerably; NatWest's reality does not match their ad campaign.

I'm not going into what happened, but the bank fuped and it cost me a fair fold. As of the now, I have submitted a formal complaint for recompense. Once this is finished, I'll move to a less stoopid bank.

I guess it would depend on the size of your savings, as you are going to want to chase the best rates - your current account should be the least important factor, unless you get a bonus on your savings rates, if you also have your current account with the same bank. If you split them, I can recommend Hargreaves Lansdown[^] for your savings

All the UK high street banks offer free personal banking - they have to or they would never get a chance to lose / waste / hide / steal1 everybodies wages. The banks here pay next to zero interest on current accounts, but charge a lot if you want to borrow anything.

It isn't free, you just don't pay for it through up-front fees.

Yes - very low interest rates on current accounts.

So the people who get into debt are supported, and the people who are in credit get penalised...great country, isn't it?

I use Santander - had only one small problem with them in 20+ years, and that was sorted very quickly and efficiently. Their internet banking is ok - it's becoming a bit of a pain as they keep increasing the security so they now send me a text with a code I have to use before any transfer will happen, but that's only a pain because the mobile doesn't get any signal indoors and I have to go to the bottom of the garden and stand in the greenhouse.

Santander are screwing up all over the shop at the moment, this is because they have made a load of acquisitions very quickly and are struggling to manage and merge everything together. I've been rowing with them for months over an account of mine that they now own.

I have had normal accounts with NatWest, Lloyds, HSBC, Halifax over the years, and have had loads of trouble with all of them for various reasons. I'm not sure there are any that do not suck. I am currently back with NatWest after a 15 or so year absence, and finding them mostly adequate (in that they haven't annoyed me as much as the others have recently). They have an easyish to use online system, and send text alerts accurately. I have also found their personal touch in branch better than many others recently.
