MS has to realize expectations have changed. They need to position XBL as something you "need" in order to have a good gaming experience, and oh look at all this great stuff XBL enables. To imply all the normal internet stuff is free is horrible. Although, their new Netflix app IS horrible (TV shows start playing season 1, episode 1 while you're still looking for the episode you actually want to watch), so if you have any other way of watching Netflix on your TV, do that instead. Their old app was simpler and easier to use. Using Netflix via Kinect feels like you're on a hidden camera show as you flail about. (The other Kinect integration is nice though.) I use the Apple TV (it's only $99! so shoot me!) and it has such a nice interface for Netflix. especially if you have an iOS device Although I had to put my cable box in between them so the Xbox wouldn't become sentient and eat the Apple TV while we sleep.

Agree so much on the new Netflix app. Browsing TV episodes was so much easier with the old one. :(

My TV has a Netflix app but it does not support CC which is handy when watching British TV shows. Kinda funny that I am Indian, and thus supposed to be more familiar with british accents and yet I struggle with it (specially movies/shows that use older accents). I believe the Xbox Netflix app does support CC.

I have the family pack so that my kids can play online, and my wife can watch Hulu/Netflix without the constant pop-up of my friends getting online. $100 for 4 gold accounts isn't bad at all!

you are looking at it all wrong see... the xbox is first and foremost a gaming console. you get the live gold to play online games which is a lot more fun that just local solo stuff.. then they offer the other stuff as a bonus . netflix youtube etcc..They are still exploring and playig with how far they can go with the extra stuff without losing track of the original purpose.. a gaming console.(that being said I wish they would add a damn web browser) so if you bought the xbox and the live gold for its intended purpose its not a problem, you can do other stuff too. if you got it JUST for the apps, you missed the mark, a dedicated pc(hooked to the tv) is better for it probably and would have far greater flexibility(things such as other streaming sites).

"You're holding it wrong!" While the 360 was designed to play games, the moment they decided to add media capabilities it ceased to be a gaming console and became a media center with the ability to play games. You can stream movies, pictures, and music from your PC, use it for netflix, Hulu, and so on. You can also play some games multiplayer without a gold account (at least you used to be able to, not sure of any changes within the past year). When they decided to raise their prices that was the end for me, I pay for my internet access, I pay for netflix, it drove me nuts that they wanted me to pay even more for the ability to use them while the other big two (Sony and Nintendo) didn't. Live should have stayed attached to the games and 'extras' much like Sony's Plus membership works. And yes, I paid for two years of Gold before I gave it up. Just to much for to little.

I was curious too. I did a quick search and it is indeed an annual amount. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/JoinLive/FamilyPackFAQ[^]

They need to make this info available though and not wait for people to find out after buying an Xbox. :-)

I dont sweat votes.. :-D as per your other reply, no its not a requirement for most games, but that is still its intended purpose when its all said and done though. as you said in another post, 5 bucks a month is not bad anyway. Also(and this one I could see being a little gotcha) you need to be a live member to get software updates to the thing as well. and there are game updates and patches you can only get as a live member. these can even apply to the games that you only play offline. And most of the games for the Kinect(such as dancing games) have extra content you can buy for them, yep you need a membership there too...

Just to clarify, you only need a silver (free) Xbox Live account to purchase downloadable content and receive updates.

my bad then, I thought it had to have the gold to do that.

Anyone else think this is a rotten idea? You cannot run Youtube/Netflix or any other app on an XBOX unless you maintain a Live Gold subscription. Remember than these apps are free and run on numerous other devices including PS3, most recent Samsung and Sony TVs and DVD players, phones and tablets etc.

Hey, Nish. I think you mentioned a while back that you had or were thinking about getting Netflix. What is the status on that? My wife and I currently have streaming Netflix and the movie selection is hit and miss for us. Is there anything better out there right now as far as streaming movies?

I had the Netflix DVD + streaming plan for a while. I recently cancelled the streaming and am now on the DVD-only plan. The movies I actually wanted to see are DVD-only, and except for 3 or maybe 4 movies everything else I watched on streaming was because there was nothing better to watch/do. I'd say you guys should try out the DVD plan, it's not as flexible as streaming, but until they seriously improve their streaming movie collection it doesn't make much sense to keep it.

                        Regards, Nish
