I am a pirate.

I have planned to take Visual Studio 2010 Certification exams this year and my main sources are these three books: - MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-511): Microsoft .NET Framework 4—Windows Applications Development - MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-515): Microsoft .NET Framework 4—Web Applications Development - MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-516): Microsoft .NET Framework 4—Accessing Data with ADO.NET The problem is that I have downloaded these books illegally for free and worse than that I don’t feel guilty at all. How about you? Have you ever downloaded programming books illegally? Did you feel guilty after that?
William Shakespeare Three sentences for getting SUCCESS: a) Know more than other. b) Work more than other. c) Expect less than other.
The only time I pirate is when the content is unavailable to me (e.g., Dexter can only be bought on DVD months after season finales), but then I pay for the content when it is available. Though, I have never pirated a book. The only thing close to that was that I bought a book from a retail bookstore, then returned it once the one from Amazon arrived (I wanted to read it right away, but Amazon was cheaper). If you don't feel guilty, your moral compass is probably broken.

The FBI, yeah call them... no trouble at all reaching the pirate in Iran :) See pirate's profile
Yes, I was joking or did you miss that bit?

Either Iran or North Korea, hard for the US Government to do much of anything considering current diplomatic relations with those countries. US Government more worried that they will get nuclear weapons than some small time pirate. Funny, I would say Isreal is more dangerous with nuclear weapons than those countries, and only the US has actually really used them.

What a strange thing to say. Why? (your answer and then mine will probably get this moved to the Soapbox).

Or China, or Germany, or the US... I'm curious if we'll see a time when some countries issue Letters of Marque and Reprisal for Internet Pirates.

You mean as a weapon in war, of course. Lots of countries have developed them as a hobby. :) You get in the club and suddenly what you say matters.

Nonsense. Most authors wouldn't write books if they weren't going to get paid.

Who is threatening to attack Iran right now. Who feels most threatened by the arab countries, and the arabs within their own country. Who invaded, so unsuccessfully Lebanon. If Isreal feels like it is up against a wall, and it has always felt threatened, maybe they would use them.

We have certainly proved that. Both Iraq and Libya gave up on nuclear weapon development, and got invaded. The message that many got from this is that you need to have nuclear weapons to keep the US from invading you.

I actually snaffled Neal Asher's book only because I could not buy them (with the possible exception of Amazon spit). Like you I beleive those that can afford to should pay for the content, however I refuse to bust my balls trying to purchase something that a publisher won't sell to me b/c I'm not in the US.

I think it was never taken seriously.

What a weird and narrow view on IP. Are you saying that my LOB code should be given away but the game I'm writing should be paid for?

Really? Are they? Where did you see that? Is it imminent? Can I buy tickets?

Primary and secondary education are free, that doesn't mean the teachers don't get paid.
It isn't free, you just don't pay the teachers directly (the government is in the middle).

No cash no motivation...do you code for free?

I'm pleading a Bill Clinton on this one, I did download an illegal book but I didn't read it. :)
