I have to ask... Why do you need ID to get a phone? Surely just walk into shop, buy phone, buy sim, walk out, good to go! Or has India got specific laws on phone ownership?

Yes, in India, you need proof of ID to get a phone connection. This includes prepaid connections. In contrast, in the US, you do need a credit check for contract plans, but not so for prepaid connections.

Pretty much the same in UK. If you are on a contract it is deemed to be credit, so ID and other stuff is needed. But a prepay/Pay as you go type deal is just buy and fly.

If you are wondering why this is so in India, it's a measure to make it difficult for terrorists to get prepaid connections.

But not very difficult if they use a photo of the President.

And how is that working then? Has it eliminated terrorism or merely inconvenienced 1.1 billion potential customers? Another example of a government initiative that doesn't work. (Don't even get me started on the UK Govt!).

They said that to Obama. Eventually he went into pictures, in India.

And why should the government be concerned about that? (Yeah, yeah, that's sarcasm and I'm with you, not remotely supporting the Indian government. I was surprised to find how easy it is to buy a prepaid connection in the UK - walk in, pay 10 pounds, walk out with working SIM card.)

Didn't Obama do something similar to gain the Presidency? [It's a joke, see the icon?]

But then he'd outsource our entire government to Bangladesh.
