Yes, in India, you need proof of ID to get a phone connection. This includes prepaid connections. In contrast, in the US, you do need a credit check for contract plans, but not so for prepaid connections.

Pretty much the same in UK. If you are on a contract it is deemed to be credit, so ID and other stuff is needed. But a prepay/Pay as you go type deal is just buy and fly.

And how is that working then? Has it eliminated terrorism or merely inconvenienced 1.1 billion potential customers? Another example of a government initiative that doesn't work. (Don't even get me started on the UK Govt!).
