Anyone do any life coaching on the side?

I found myself needing to hire college students fresh out of school in order to keep the payroll down. I ended up teaching them how to work, but I found myself also teaching them how to live. I actually started to structure that into my plans so I could be a bit more intentional about it. I found that if I didn't work on the whole person, things tended to fall apart at work. In a way, I guess I became their life coach. I still keep in contact with a couple of them, even after they (and I) moved on. Most of my experience was very similar to being a dad to them. I found that the best management/coaching books on the subject ended up matching a lot of the things that are said in good parenting books (especially the parenting for teens books). The summary of everything I found is as follows: Care about them as a whole person. If you do that, you are well on your way to being an excellent life coach, or whatever you call it.

Isn't life coach just another term for unemployed? Like consultant?

I would have figured it was a bunch of garbage, but I took a time and life management course for work and it changed my opinion. I've got to get some things in order, but I'm going to look the guy up and setup a 5 year plan with him including education and mentors. His website does a very poor job of presenting him, but here it is[^].

I've helped to raise a few kids that weren't my own, for short periods of time, and I'm happy to report that they've all turned out great, but I have no idea how one would make a business out of this. I feel a strong sense of moral duty to pass on to youngsters what I've learned in life, if they happen to be smart enough to ask; it would feel wrong to charge for that service. Still, it's a gift beyond value to be granted the wisdom of another who has earned it from the school of life. How many are really capable of understanding and appreciating such a boon? For as long as I've known you, Marc, yours has been a voice of reason and tolerance. If anyone here is qualified to offer such a service, it's you. If you want to try this, I encourage you to do so. I know of no one more qualified or capable. My only worry is that you might be casting pearls before swine. That can lead to bitterness, and that would diminish and demean you. Don't let it get that far, if you decide to pursue this course.

I don't think you should spend altogether too much time on it. Try a short course: Breathe, eat, sh1t, sleep. Now get back to work.
