Funnily enough, I believe they say similar things about your religion as well. Isn't it amazing? One God, and yet every religion thinks that only they are right?
I was brought up to respect my elders. I don't respect many people nowadays.

Sort of. I get your point, but oddly enough, most people I have asked say the think their religion is good, but most people know it probably is not the true church. That could be a fun exercise for you, ask people if they believe Christ is at the head of their church, just like in the days of the Bible. You may be surprised to see how few people actually do believe their church is the true church.

Pope Benedict set to resign at the end of the month. Source[^]. This is meant to be a neutral news item from me - it's not intended to kick off a religious/atheist debate, but I've posted it here because I know that trying to keep the kiddies from having a go at each other is futile.

I wish I did better understand why you believe that.
I'm surprised that you're surprised. :) There are tons of articles, but Wiki has an article on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope[^] It states "The earliest record of the use of this title was in regard to the by then deceased Patriarch of Alexandria, Pope Heraclas of Alexandria (232–248)" But most importantly, the Bible says nothing of popes. If the Church continued uninterrupted, why is there no more Bible? Catholics are the only ones who believe Peter was a pope. All other Christians do not believe that Peter was a pope which is why I say there are tons of articles on it and is a very common belief, at least outside the Catholic church.

Glad that I got you surprised! I think I did a poor job articulating what I was trying to get at. I was just wondering about the role of Peter and why you believe he had no primacy? That's all. I didn't want to get stuck in the semantics of the word. When was it invented, who invented it, etc. But rather what the word represents. So let me do my best to rephrase my question. I hope I get this right. Please bear with me. Are there any articles to help me understand why you believe Peter was not singled out among the 12? Not meant to strengthen the 12 should they fall? Not meant to feed the "sheep" and "lambs"? Does this make better sense? I hope this does a better job. Was looking for something to read during my lunch break or after work. Thanks! :)

I agree that Peter was singled out to a degree. He was the Senior apostle. He was not the pope. That was something invented by man at a later date. After Peter died and the other apostles died, the church that Christ established also died. It no longer had the authority to continue on. There were no more prophets and therefore no more scripture. That is why the New Testament ends. It isn't because God had nothing more to say, it's because His representatives were no longer alive. Yes, there were good people, called Christians, who tried to keep the church going but it was on their own, without revelation. During the Nicean creed (somewhere around 300 AD) they got together and tried to decide what God was like. There were no more prophets to declare God's word, it was now just man trying to come up with doctrine on their own. I could go on and on and on, but I'll stop. My only point was that Peter was not a Pope, that was a term created much later and that the authority and revelation ended shortly after Peter was killed.

Thanks for that response. I still don't understand how you arrived to that conclusion. That's why I am trying to understand why you believe that. Was hoping to get some articles to read that supports your belief. My whole philosophy is "the proof is in the pudding". Not trying to poke fun at you or anything like that. All the biblical names are different in Arabic Abraham --> Ibrahim, John --> Yohanna (???, come to think of it this is feminine????) etc. The MIL didn't like Adam and tried to get me to choose something a bit more Arab. Don't get me wrong, their names can be really nice, but I didn't want to label the wee'un. So I asserted my rights as head of the household (ha!) and threatened to call him George, which is unpronounceable to her side. LOLZ If & when no 2 comes along, we're hoping for a girl as there are plenty of names to choose from.....

If it's anything like the CoE, a claim of not wanting the job in the first place is very common, that way it's all God's will against one's own judgement. Some people may actually believe this, but for most my guess is this is just how the game is played. According to this[^] turning down the job is possible but rare. Understandably given the way you get to dress in the height of Byzantine fashion. I wonder if the outgoing one is part of the conclave to elect the new one?

According to this article on CNN: No. [^] However, Benedict appointed something like 67 of the 188 cardinals in the conclave.

2 fold. One, I already explained. The other, I believe that Joseph Smith saw God the Father and Jesus Christ and that through him, Christ restored His church. There's a lot more details to it than that, but that's the summary. Why DO you believe that Peter was a pope, or that the Catholic church goes all the way back to Peter? Why do you think the Bible ended?

A Dead ringer for Kate Winslett[^]Was it enough that the names should be pronounced the same or did they need to have the same spelling? I was thinking of Daniel - Danyal. We faced the same problem with our kids, but at a much smaller level. There are plenty of names that work in both Swedish and German. But they're often pronounced differently, or just completely oldfashioned in one of the countries. We also went for names that works in english as well.

Yes, I know what the Catholics say about Peter.
and that you disagreed with it. Now you're asking me what I think about Peter. I hope I am not misinterpreting your words, but I trusted that statement you made. So I am unsure as to why you're asking me now. But since you wanted to know why I believe that Peter held a primacy among the 12. Take a look at the following articles. As I have mentioned before it's quite a bit of a read so I hope you can enjoy it with a cup of tea/coffee/beverage. :) Peters Primacy[^] Origins of Peter as Pope[^] Peter and the Papacy[^] Peter's successors[^] I hope this does not come off the wrong way, but since you know much about the Catholic faith and I know practically little to nothing of yours, but what you said. Can you send me some links to some historical documents or articles that explains the church ending after the last apostle? Or something that supports your belief? Finally, I am going to be honest I have absolutely no idea what you meant about the Bible ending. Can you clarify what you mean by that?

Pronunciation is what is important, Adam is spelled آدم in Arabic, put pronounced the same :). Daniel might be problematic, given the missus's family is effectively Palestinian, I don't know though so I'll run it by she-who-must-be-obeyed as we need to find more options.

Why are there no more scriptures from prophets? Since the days of Adam, God has called prophets, they have written their revelations into scripture, but shortly after Peter died there are no more scriptures. Why?

If (hopefully when) we have another barin and if its a girl we've pretty much settled on Sara. Currently the only boy's name we have is Ramsey (which for personal reasons I hate) and Daniel (see post below), and as it turns out Ephraim (good if I were a 17th century puritan). Looking through this[^] Basil and Russell seem to be options, though not very enticing ones... Also Idris is possible, the poor thing would be hemi-demi-semi-hemi Welsh, but I don't like to talk about it, it's distressing having sheep in the family....
