I can understand, but honestly the film was exactly as one would expect from the writers of Batman Begins and the director of 300, it was almost literally a combination of the two. Obviously you have to like their style to like the film itself.
Not really being a Superman fan I found this is the first adaption that was worthy of the underlying saga, without it being cliché-ridden. Also it's the exact opposite of the previous movie, which I have to say I loathe deeply (emo cr#p with the stupidest superhero movie plot ever).The problem is, Superman is the complete antithesis of Batman. Superman is supposed to be light, to Batman's dark. How are we to reconcile Jonathan Kent's exhortations for Clark to grow up with an inate selfishness with the selflessness that Superman epitomises in the comics? In the end, Superman comes across as dull, where Batman is interesting.
I was brought up to respect my elders. I don't respect many people nowadays.

I tried watch 20 mins of a Bollywood film once. Despite the picturesque ladies and certain surreal charm, playing guess the plot and figuring out why the ladies were singing as if to confuse bats got wearing. Better than the two Matrix sequels that don't exist though.

Batman being dark is a rather recent turn. The original Batman was nothing like the one in the recent films, and also the sad truth is that is was Adam West's portayal that first made the character really mainstream. Same with Superman, over the decades there were many incarnations of the character, that's why there are things like golden age/pre-crisis Superman, not all of which were light. The original Superman had no remorses killing bad guys, which granted is the opposite of Batman, but not in a was as one would expect it. Also one has to keep in mind that this film still is a summer blockbuster, with mostly the usual obligatory stuff (lots of action, grand scale demolitions). I think they made a good job making it fit in the plot, and left out the parts that just wouldn't work in this context, like a real romantic storyline, that are otherwise considered a must, well, just because. And yes, it's also true, that they basically made a Batman with superpowers (exaggerating a bit) in this movie. Which I don't necessarily find a bad thing, as long as they don't make a movie with both in them, which would make this more appearant, in a negative way.

I did. They had plots with characters which developed etc. Superman has always stuck me as more "Superman big, Superman strong, Superman mighty, Superman wear underpants over leotard"

Yes, Superman always comes across as a celebration of the USA's superiority over every other culture that's ever existed, or ever will exist. "USA big, USA strong, USA mighty, USA wear underpants over leotard elect clever president[^]." Unless you're watching the Roger Meyers, Sr.[^] version, that is.

This is an awesome "what if" take on the classic Superman origins story: Red Son:[^] "In Red Son, Superman's rocket ship lands on a Ukrainian collective farm rather than in Kansas... Instead of fighting for "...truth, justice, and the American Way", Superman is described in Soviet radio broadcasts "...as the Champion of the common worker who fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact." His "secret identity" (i.e. the name his adoptive parents gave him) is a state secret."

I was expecting to sit through an hour of origin story in Kansas, but they interspersed his youth as flashbacks, so it kept the story moving. I though Amy Adams as Lois was a horrible choice. She and Superman had ZERO chemistry. Henry and Margot Kidder would have been a better match... And, yeah, the fight scenes were a bit ridiculous. There has to come a point when 2 guys who are beating each other up for 30 minutes with no effect (other than destroying the city) should stop and say, "Alright, we gotta come up with something better than this..."

At over 12.5 hours (plus toilet/beer breaks) that would pretty much take a whole day to watch. I hope you didn't watch the appendices, documentaries and other crap extra features on the same day?

You're right. It's not that good. The back story is ponderous. Jonathan Kent is particularly unlikeable, and the fight scenes while being too fast to see properly, drag on far too long. All in all, it's a film that's far too impressed with its own special effects than on character and plot development.
