It's still gonna be a question in the heads of whoever will interview you. I don't think it's relevant here, but since you will probably have to answer it anyways, wouldn't it be better to tell us here, where you are less prone to be judged? plus we could help you work out on your answer, or at the very least provide our own experiences.

True. But still I have known people who were laid off but that was only because the company had been waiting for an excuse. They would have liked to fire them but certain situations made that sensitive so they waited for a time when they could just lay them off.

In that case the official reason would have to be something else, so the reason wouldn't be a good determining factor if the OP was or wasn't worth hiring.

Geetings all. I was recently laid off from my job and I'm looking for my next gig. I'm looking for entry/junior level roles in C# ASP.NET and T-SQL. I also have some skill with Java, HTML, CSS and Javascript. I currently live in Raleigh, NC and would prefer opportunities here (i.e. Research Triangle Park); but I'm willing to relocate if relocation expenses are covered. One thing I did when I didn't have a job was to create a website that illustrated my skills. I think it's impressive that, if during an interview, you can call up a website you created. Sometimes that is necessary because often times you cannot really show your work from a previous employer. It may give you something to do while searching for a job.

It's lame I know. One case we had an employee who should have been fired because he sucked but for some medical reason the company could not fire him. But as soon as downsizing came they laid him off as quick as they could. Whatever the medical issue was it protected him from being fired but not laid off. However, he sucked, regardless of the term used to let him go. So, when someone says they were laid off I don't immediately assume they are completely innocent. That's why for me it is a valid question to ask why. I think it is foolish not to ask why, in fact.

It's lame I know. One case we had an employee who should have been fired because he sucked but for some medical reason the company could not fire him. But as soon as downsizing came they laid him off as quick as they could. Whatever the medical issue was it protected him from being fired but not laid off. However, he sucked, regardless of the term used to let him go. So, when someone says they were laid off I don't immediately assume they are completely innocent. I totally get what your saying. I'm just pointing out that they aren't going to respond "I got laid off because my company was downsizing and I was the first to go because I sucked".

Shouldn't be too hard. I don't live on the East coast, and even I have had recruiters from Raleigh, NC contact me. Also, I am curious why you were laid off. The only time I was ever really laid off was when the company I was working for tanked (it was a startup).

The company (small sized) is cutting back due to budget issues. Unfortunate, but such is the way with business these days. I've got my resume out on the job boards, and I've had recruiters calling, but I find that the best way to get actual interviews is to network with folks. So I've been reaching out to all my networks to see if anyone has heard of any opportunities.

Please don't take this the wrong way (I'm just trying to understand why you're asking), but is that really relevant? Whether the reason is cutbacks, the company closing or any other reason, I still need a new job.
Many employers will lay somebody off instead of firing them. This way the fire-ee can still collect unemployment. And the management doesn't have to feel guilty about taking away all an employee's income. Quick way to tell which you were. If the last company is already hiring to fill your old job, you were nicely fired. If they are now forced to make ends meet with less staff, you were probably laid off because they couldn't afford to keep you. If a future employer sees your old company is hiring for a similar job, you might want to prepare to discuss that.

That sounds exactly like the kind of thing all those annoying recruiters keep approaching me with (despite none of those terms appearing on my CV). Have you tried turning it off and on again contacting a recruiting agency?

Literally keep applying and harassing the recruitment agencies. Always be a bit wary with Agencies, if you find a good honest one, keep in contact. Right now there is a shortage of Developers out there, not so sure about junior devs but I'd imagine sh. Remember be positive and show enthusiasm. The title of this thread "Laid Off" is pretty negative, giving any of us reading this article a negative view of you straight away.

I think I've really gotten off on the wrong foot here. My goal was to reach out to find out where there are companies hiring, but, unfortunately, the title of my post seems to be a point of contention. It's ironic, to me, that only a year ago the words "laid off" were met with sympathy and understanding; because of the economic climate of the time. Clearly that is no longer the case (even though, today, the economy is still recovering). Even though one does not get a second chance to make a first impression, I will, nevertheless, begin again: I'm a junior level developer seeking a new opportunity to leverage my skills. Though I've been recently laid off from my job (due to budget cuts) I am still very enthusiastic and eager to continue getting my hands dirty with coding. I am also a career changer, who started out in IT on the help desk side of the industry. But I've always had a passion for coding, taking time to learn all I could about .NET and C# (and a little Java thrown in for good measure). I also know a bit about T-SQL (I love writing stored procedures). In an effort to boost my marketability, I designed and published a CV website, to showcase some of my work. It is always a work in progress and I'm in the process of adding some new apps to it.
