    Ah yes, better call the thought-police, I dared to expect to get away with rudeness and that makes me a thought-criminal. Well you see, I'm Dutch. And Dutch people are rude - so rude in fact that even Dutch people complain about the rudeness of Dutch people.

    How very sad that you take pride in being obnoxious. I used to work for a rather large Dutch bank, and though a lot of the cloggies where forthright and often abrupt, I would not go as far as to say the underlying trait was rudeness.

      I no longer buy cigarettes, but I think all machines have now been removed from pubs, they are not allowed to be seen from shop floors anymore, if you want some you have to go and be sneered at by someone for being disgusting.

      In Hungary they've just introduced a new law regarding sales of tobacco[^], funnily the Government's supporters seem to have got most of the licences. Fancy that!

        I disagree. Certainly, it's pretty rude, but in order to complete the transaction you don't need to pay attention to the checkout lady. So why demand it? To get petty revenge on someone who was on the phone with someone more important than you? Out of jealousy because you're not as important as the person they're on the phone with? Sorry, checkout lady, but almost everyone is more important than you.

        I agree with you, it's certainly rude to some point, but all you need to do is unload your items, pay up, pickup the bags and get the heck outta there.

          So you think it's polite to expect to be served when you don't even have the courtesy to pay attention to what the cashier is doing? I have a lot more time, and respect, for anyone who is polite rather than rude.

          He's agreeing that it's rude. Nevertheless, it's not the checkout person's job to teach manners, specially not paying customers.

            This story on the BBC[^] of a checkout girl who refused to serve a woman who was on the phone. The supermarket involved has apologised. Is it just me who thinks good on the girl for refusing to serve the rude and ignorant customer until they actually paid attention to her rather than whoever they were on the phone to?

            For every time the girl or boy at the register at the supermarket was too busy to address me because they were flirting with the bag-boy I would be a rich man. When I go to a store I am paying to be accommodated. That said, I always hang up my phone when it is my turn.

                It is both parties role to be polite. I totally agree that the cashier should be attentive, but equally feel that the customer should show at least basic good manners.

                  Completely disagree. Its not her job to put up with abuse but it is her job to put up with impoliteness and the minor inconvenience of someone being rude. As long as the line between being rude and being abusive isn't crossed the customer is always right and if you don't like it get another job.

                      Well, it may not be in the job description, but it comes with the job, besides, there are way worse things that a customer could do; that cell phone incident could be easily ignored, and things would've gone faster and better for everybody. The lesson would be: pick your battles. That one wasn't worth it.

                        We don't get that in the UK, we have to bag up our own stuff (they tried having people do it but as the almost complete response from customers was leave my stuff alone) and the checkouts are so thinly staffed they'd have to yell to have a conversation with the next one.

                          No, they aren't. Sometimes the customer is nothing more than a rude arsehole... The notion of someone being right all the time is plainly ludicrous.

                            Yes, in Switzerland we do. In Italy it's useless, nobody follows any rule. BTW, I went once to Queensland, stayed in Cairns and had so much rain you can't believe it. Were 17 hours flight, with stop in Singapore, that was long.. Very nice, Australia, so.

                            Yup they have a WET season, most people avoid this time of year because... well it rains all the time. Those of us with family there just ignore it. I plenty of practice doing that in Singapore :laugh:

                              Agree If you want to answer your phone, let the person behind through. It is just good manners. Likewise if the checkout person was talking on their phone, I would dump the groceries on the counter and walk out. Mind you I have answered the phone whilst at the check out, but I apologised to both, and asked the caller to please wait. Not the best, but respectful to all parties. I don't like when someone calls you and then they take an incoming call on their line two. I usually just hang up when this happens even if it is my boss. They always call back anyway.
