When MS wants to update itself, it just nags at you, or forces a restart. My Nexus 7 has just notified me that it's downloaded Android 4.3 but there isn't enough battery to upgrade it, but that's OK - connect it to the charger and it'll do it then... MS: take note, please. Upgrades can be done transparently... And politely!

I understand how a computer works down to motherboard component level and still just want to click "Send" over typing out some error prone and cryptic command in an archaic shell.

And not to forget, MS updates kills your data at a rate faster than you imagine, while in Droid I can set updates to Wi-Fi only.

I regularly clear the ram on my Note 1 and a nice little message pops say it has closed 25 apps WTF, why do I have 25 apps active on the bloody phone when all it is doing is sitting there on the desk, they are obviously not essential to the operation of the phone!

I took the defaults when I setup the Surface, the only nagging I get are when it needs to reboot. My last android, it didn't offer an option not to reboot, just did it.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

The real reason that most Linux distributions look as if they were created by a bunch of amateurs in their spare time is simply that they were created by a bunch of amateurs in their spare time. To produce polished software requires a dedicated team of professionals working specifically toward that goal, as in a big corporation. So my point is that no matter what the people who work on Linux understood or understand, Linux will never compete on the desktop until it is reworked by a for-profit organization.

Pretty sure that any number of commercial organizations have touch the Linux core. I would actually be very surprised if every bit of code in the core hasn't been touched or reviewed by multiple commercial interests (by programmers paid to do just that.) I would suspect that much of the essential basics outside the core have also received some treatment by professionals. As one moves further and further from the basics is it possible that it is entirely amateur. However amateur likely only means that they were not paid to work on Linux (or associated) but not that they are not in fact professional programmers.

I ended up giving away my Samsung Galaxy 7 because while the rest of the world was getting Android updates, my Sammy wasn't. Android fragmentation is still the #1 issue with Android. Well, that and the fact that crashing apps and even OS crashes seemed daily events.

Yeah, amateurs like Intel, RedHat, Novell, Sun Microsystems. Have you even seen a Linux desk?

When I went to buy a tablet recently I purposely chose one with an Android OS. Never used Android and wanted to see what it was like and hate Windows 8 so the choice was a no brainer and so far I'm very impressed.
VS2010/Atmel Studio 6.1 ToDo Manager Extension Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.

And that's because it's development has been driven predominatly by software engineers and rocket scientists who love the whole command line thing. They don't get that 99.5% of actual users are not like them, have no idea and no interest in how a computer works, they just want to click "Send" (or whatever) and see their email/farcebook post/etc. happen. Heck, some struggle with that. If anyone had actually bothered to rope in some graphic designers and UX designers (I'm guessing Microsoft, along with Apple have buildings full of them) then just maybe that would have happened.

My Linux Thunderbird email client automatically prompts for attachments when it detects context, and reminds you at send time. If you select text for a reply, it pastes it automatically into the pane without intervention. When the pathetic offerings from MS do that, then they will have caught up. The reason Linux hasn't caught on is because hardware manufacturers are scared of free software, and scared of losing their cosy relationship with MS business discounts. I bailed on MS 4 years ago and haven't looked back. And yes, ten years ago the Hemp-sandalled weirdos did run Linux, and yes they are jerks, but no longer.

...And then there are times when MSDOS is far, far better than Android. Depends on your requirements and expectations. Surface RT was a huge fail, but I think it was a worthy foray into the tablet market for MS. People are just not ready to get rid of the desktop-with-icons UX yet, but I have a feeling that this will change in time. Remember VISTA? What happened to that? The most successful desktop ever launched was built off of it. I will never really fully understand the psyche of those who proclaim one platform over another. Why not choose the one that works for you and shut up about those that don't instead of turning into a religious platform zealot? NO, I am not referring to you with that statement, but to those who do the whole "X is greater than Y" thing in general. I love WIN8 on my ATIV, but I am not telling everyone how Android will never meet their needs, simply because my needs are not theirs.

I just upgraded my phone to a Galaxy s3 mini; it is a thing of beauty. Before that I had an Ace. Not enough memory, but it never hung, never crashed, no app crashed at all in two years. My tablet is a firesale TouchPad by HP, and that has crashed two or three times in 18 months, but I just use it for Skype and video. I haven't had a Windows anything for three years now, and the thought of anyone paying to use it makes me incredulous, both that they have the nerve to charge and that people will pay.MicroKid was a song written by Level 42 in the 80's; MicroSoft is something that was 'cool' twenty years ago, but as a consumer experience is utterly lacking. And the new application paradigm seems(I could be wrong) to be trashing the mainstream of MS development investment and skills in order to try and compete with mobile.

I have about three apps that sometimes refuse to display if they are closed and reopened - I have to swipe them off the "recent apps" list before they will work again. Other than that, nothing has crashed once - the tablet only gets re-started when Android itself updates, so that's three times (I think) in 8 months. There is no way on earth my Win7 desktop could survive that long without slowing to a crawl! :laugh:

Nah, I didn't talk about WP, I talk about the good old desktop windows that has no way of knowing how is it connected.

I agree - but it's not just devs. The life of the user is better now than it's ever been as well. I'm sure you remember the pre PC days, and what fun it was to enter a single wrong character in a long input...then swear and curse the VDU blue. App crash, but even the poor ones don't do it anywhere near as much as they used to: even in the days of Win 98 the blue screen of death was a daily occurrence. I'd just like to see a bit less of the "mine's better because it is" attitude and a bit more "that's good for the user" because that's gotta be good for everybody, not just the poor sods we code for! :laugh: BTW: how things have changed: Google grammar checker just replaced "got to" to "gotta" in that last sentence. I'd have got a thick ear from my English teacher for that!
