I don't think it's possible, but the first step would be to stop the media from creating a culture of irrational fear. Another step would be to have a society without such huge gaps in opportunity and ability to sustain life comfortably. Could be headed towards soapbox territory....

A small comparison with Switzerland: In Switzerland a majority of the male population is conscripted to the army and is required to keep an army rifle or assault rifle at home. Switzerland has one of the lowest murder rates in the world with 0.7 per 100,000 population. I'd say it is a matter of culture.

Or in our case, a lack of it. :sigh: Too many people just do not understand the value of life.

Even if you sincerely believe it, it's clearly a discussion that belongs in the soapbox.

It would be simpler to arm and train everyone to properly use a gun than to pretend that banning guns will work or stop killings.

And cheese, you forgot the cheese. Some years ago I wen't to Zug in Switzerland to install a server. During lunch I asked the people how to make a proper cheese fondue. During the next two hours I learned a lot about cheese, and Swiss culture.

I have no doubt you'd be civil: that isn't the issue. I do, however, disagree that the conversation would be best discussed in the soapbox. I wasn't looking for a conversation, just expressing a personal view. Still, I'll put it over there and see what happens.

It was just a statement: wasn't intended to elicit anything. However, if you feel it should be in the soapybox feel free to transfer it over.

Of course, Mark. Obviously one would never expect such a statement in this forum would elicit anything other than mild nods and everyone would move on, keyboard untouched.

No, of course not. But you'd hopefully understand that some people would see you as being 2 beers short of a six-pack for not anticipating them and acting accordingly.

I'm not commenting, even though I just spent three horrendous days in the Peoples' Republic of California unarmed by law, and subject to the mindless or malicious intent of any of the armed loonies that reside there, despite the law. Even though many who dwell here would benefit from learning that opinions and facts are different creatures, and no amount of wishful thinking will change facts, I'm not commenting... ;P

No, of course not. But you'd hopefully understand that some people would see you as being 2 beers short of a six-pack for not anticipating them and acting accordingly.

Ha! That is, of course, the left wing, communist thinking of the nanny state. Why am I to be held responsible for other people's reactions? Are they children? Are they morons? No, only the people who think we have to be responsible for other people's thoughts and actions are morons. Hello, moron. :-)
