On Stack Overflow you have to see Microsoft as always being right, it's like a religion to them and that is why i now post my programs here and steer clear of S/O Others have tweeted they feel the same but it seem that Chris only has ears for MS as if they own him or something. There loss is someone else's gain!

I wish you hadn't met this, but...you are preaching to the converted as far as I am concerned. I've brought it up several times in Bugs'n'Sugs because it happens far too often. I don't believe that a question with an answer should be closed at all, unless it's spam or abusive. And yes, it is rude, arrogant, and selfish. :sigh:

I understood it, I read his code example, and my answer existed before you closed it. I took the time and effort to write it as a code block, and even test the code locally before submitting. I solved his problem but you're hiding it from him! Don't you feel powerful - this is what I hated about Stack Overflow - you try to help but the high and mighty power users crap all over you, and it's obvious that they didn't read the question. Difficult though - when you spend time testing and writing a solution, post it, get a request for some clarification from the OP and go back to find that The Usual Suspects have closed the question since he replied. Meaning you have to leave him in limbo because you can't reply to him at all...

I agree. It happens quite often when get a reply to a comment and the question has since been closed. I do agree that if there is a solution the question should always remain open. Just don't count anymore unclear posts beyond the 3 anyway and leave it open. However, it feels like 90% of QA questions are unclear so I have little sympathy for them getting closed. Hopefully the OP reads our comments before it gets closed and realizes they need to be more clear. My favorite is when you ask for clarification and they copy and paste the original "question" as if that clears things up. :laugh: :laugh:

I know nothing about your particular post, but you are right on about Stack Overflow. Their formula seems to be: 1: incoming new question 2: as quickly as possible, close it and mark it off topic This helps no one and drives people (like me) away. If it is spam like "cheap nike shoes" then yes, delete it. When my kids ask something in a less than perfect way, I try to figure out what they mean and answer it - I don't say "you are off topic" and walk away.

Hmm. I just checked the question I think he means: Cope and paste listview more advanced[^] and it's interesting but that also has an answer from SAK - who is listed as one of the people closing it as "not clear, or is incomplete and has not been phrased in a way that allows it to be fully understood" - according to his answers list. For some reason, that leaves a nasty taste in my mouth...

For fear of being blasted off this site, I've never seen a problem with SO. It gets beaten to a pulp here from time to time and it may be deserved, I'm not sure. All I know is more often than not, when I find an answer in google search results it's usually on a SO post. :^) Of course, when I do find answers the questions are worded very clearly and the work is shown. It makes me wonder why does CP get the posters who don't know how to ask questions? Perhaps it's because SO already blasted them?

I wouldn't know, I still avoid the QA-section. Happens on the forums too, and while once is merely an event, it could have happened to the OP more than once in the last couple of weeks. Other differences are that it only took three votes to delete it, and the fact that it might have been deleted for the wrong motivation.

I've got to admin 90% of my queries are answered by google putting up SO. Yet I have only once been tempted to contribute, and yet I am happy to contribute here, odd. If I am looking for an article 90% are supplied by CP, different focus I guess, different values.

I dare say it's down to google's algorththms, and maybe how they choose to index SO. The bad questions will still be there, they just don't rank highly. The well-asked and well-answered ones that are up-voted highly will gain better ranking. It is depressing though that so many questions here are poor quality. Maybe a quicker, more decisive moderation system to just delete the utter crap so it's never even seen is needed.
