I'm doing some updates to my XP via Windows Update. It is working so fast that I've almost felt asleep... :zzz: For 32Mb of downloads it is working for hours (at the amazing speed of about 30 kbits/s :omg: ). I have no speed problems when going to other sites, so the problem really is with Windows Update. Thank god I do all my programming in another machine, or else I don't know how I could explain to my boss "Yes, I know, I'm sitting here watching the screen for about 4 hours, but I'm just waiting for the updates to finish download..." :-D Has anyone else noticed problems with Windows Update today?

I get 6-7kbps if I am lucky. Normally I get somewhere from 2-5kbps, on bad days it's even less than that. So my 56kbps modem is actually 5-6kbps.

Get your IT people to install a SUS server, it will cache the updates localy for you, much faster. Stephen

Please note that I was getting that speed (thank god that it has finished the download now, even though one of the updates failed to download :mad: ) only from the Windows Update site. Anywhere else I choosed to go, I've got the normal speed (I have 512 kbit/s on cable). Thank god that I'm not on dialup any more... My phone company would like very much that I stayed about 4 1/2 hours online (just to get those damned updates) :-D

Yes, I know... But, as I said, I work mostly in another machine and this one is just for testing and net access. I just kept the IE window in a small corner of the screen and cursed every time I clicked a link in an e-mail and IE warned me that I was going away form the update and he was going to cancel the download if I insisted in going to other page. (It's been a day of select-link, copy-link, open another IE, paste-link :( )

Not good for me, unfortunatly :(( I'm working from home and the company that I work with doesn't like to give much access to the local network from the outside... Oh, well... It's the first time this happens to me... Let's hope that it's the MS servers that are starting to celebrate easter... :rolleyes:

OK, but I have seen it go as high as 13-14 KBps sometimes, but this is a bit rare. But you are right about modem speed being in kbps and the download speed in KBps.

You can't imagine how your net attitude will change ;) When I was on dialup (56 Kbits/s), I always checked the size of the downloads and was always looking to the clock to check how much time I was online. A download of 3Mb would made me think twice if I really need that file. Since I've got cable, with no more timed access and with 8 Gb/month of downloads, I just don't care anymore if the file is big or small :) I just download it and keep on going... Just to give you an example: Two years ago, I decided to try Linux and asked a friend of mine to get me the Debian 2.0 CDs (3 cds). Some months ago, Debian released version 3.0 and I didn't think twice on downloading the full set of cds (7 cds with Linux and applications). I just kicked getright and let it work without worries :cool:

SUS = Software Update Services http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/default.asp Will not handle things like IE or MediaPlayer, but will deal with most other patches for you, and is a bargin at the price (free).
