Breaking News: Windows 8 / 10 calculator removes Natural Log (ln) button

Have you noticed that the ln (natural log) button is removed from Windows 8 / Win 10 calculator? You can see the (original - win xp, win vista, win 7) had it. Old Windows Calculator (image)[^] Why they remove that? Oh, here's the terribly useful Windows 10 doc on the calculator. Ugh! Calculator in Windows 10[^] X| If you find the ln button in the Windows 10 calculator, please let me know. I need to calculate a natural logarithm immediately if not sooner. :laugh:

Also, has anyone noticed that you CANNOT resize the calc window from the top? That's a cool new behavior of the new Windows UI too, isn't it? More user punishment. Here's the insider view of the MS devs at work. Dev 1: Can you imagine when the user (giggle, snort) attempts to resize from the top of the window and he cannot get a resize arrow (giggle, giggle)? Dev 2: That is so funny. Hahaha, s/he'll be chasing the top edge around like a lunatic. X| X| X|

Oh my gosh!!! That is what that stupid UP Arrow is for. Never would've guessed that. I think I've figured out Microsoft's design choices... It's actually punishment for using their app. Microsoft has begun to punish users for using their stuff. It makes sense now. :laugh: :laugh: That's what Metro means. It's code for "PUNISH THE USER"!! :laugh: :laugh:

That's how TI scientific calculators work. They have a 2nd button to get to the second functions. Not saying it's a good design for an app but if you are familiar with physical calculators then it's pretty easy to see that all those buttons had the up arrow on them.

That is a good explanation of that. I agree. However, the UI designers definitely needed to think outside that box a bit, I think. It's almost like an airplane engineer thinking, "well, I have to make this thing just like a car, because that is what people know. Now, where do I put the turn signals? Right here by the steering wheel of course." :)

And here I was... trying to change the behavior of that button by actually clicking on the arrow key and the shift key on my keyboard and expecting them to actually have an effect. I didn't see that array tile on the UI until you specifically told me where it is... :doh:

So the functions you can perform depend on the width of your screen? I say "that's clever!" except I'd need the antonym. And probably a few swear words.

There's a show called "Fool Us" where magicians perform in front of Penn and Teller, and P&T try to work out how the trick is done and if they can't the magician has fooled them. Anyway, someone did a trick that replied on this very thing, that certain features of the calculator on Apple devices were only visible when the screen was orientated a certain way. When the magician used the phone he did it landscape to access certain functions and when he handed it to others to use it was given in portrait.

The best thing about is: You can't calculate anything with decimals if you're in programmer mode... You have to switch to another mode for that. X| I prefer one mode for all purposes instead of being forced to switch to different modes. Whoever thought this was a grand idea needs to be slapped as well.

Yup. It only needs to be 3.5x as wide as the minimum, and even with the history/memory stack sidebar with buttons about 2x as wide as in its minimum layout. And more perversely still it needs to be about 8% wider than its mininum to disable the "shift" in favor of all buttons in 4 rows above the numbers by stretching it vertically.
