(Back when I was Boy Scout) Scouting has never been "militaristic. Scouts are taught (and expected to learn) practical survival techniques, and they had a rifle, archery, and small game hunting merit badges strictly for the purposes of survival in the wild. We were never indoctrinated in marching, close order drill, or the proper technique for advancing on, enveloping, defeating, or defending a fortified or non-fortified position. In other words, it was hardly "militaristic".

In Italy, none of these. Just a lot of prayers with the occasional camping - useful for some of the best/worst orgies ever saw.

Scouts is a huge organization in America, so I would assume a lot of people care, one way or the other. What they should have done was teamed up with the existing Girl Scouts and just made a Scouting organization. Now, they are in competition with the girl scouts and the boy scouts popcorn is not as good as the girl scouts cookies.

I daresay the word "huge" is a pretty serious overstatement, but that wasn't my point. With all the other social engineering that's gone into that organization, this isn't even really a blip on the radar.

There is a wonderful tongue-in-cheek article by Arthur C. Clarke (who was also homosexual) on the subject of why homosexuals should not be allowed in the military. After surveying the careers of various generals - from Julius Ceasar through Richard the Lionheart to Chakka Zulu, he came to the conclusion that they should not be allowed in the army because they are too bloodthirsty .

OK, they are recruiting today, but the used to exclude them in the past. I think gay men in the army is a good idea. It can become their whole life. The attachments, and commitment to their fellow soldiers would be 100%.

They would exclude those who admitted (or claimed - if you were avoiding National Service, and could get a confirmatory diagnosis from a psychiatrist) to being homosexual. [Psychiatric assessment: 5 sessions at Five Guineas a session - 1959 going rate. :-D ]

They would exclude those who admitted (or claimed - if you were avoiding National Service, and could get a confirmatory diagnosis from a psychiatrist) to being homosexual. [Psychiatric assessment: 5 sessions at Five Guineas a session - 1959 going rate. :-D ]

That was way back, how about recently? It strikes me that sordid tales of sex, now women are in the armed forces, are rife in the papers. This is new. Never seen tales of homosexual activity in the forces.

The editor's decision is final. :-D When homosexuality was illegal, there were plenty of Courts Martial cases punishing homosexual activity. Whether homosexuals were Court Marshalled depended very much on the attitude of the CO towards homosexuality. When it became legal, but unacceptable to the services, homosexual activity was 'punished' by discharge. Again, at the discression of the CO. Now it is both legal and acceptable to the services, there is no deterrent to homosexuals joining the Armed Forces. Given that homosexuals joined the Armed Forces when they would be severely punished if discovered (the Courts Martial records attest to this), it would seem more likely that the Forces would now have proportionately more homosexuals than before.

I did hear a story of some paratroopers raping a rapist, to teach him a lesson. But that doesnt count really.
