We know these are consistently higher than reality, but a higher speed allows for a higher hurricane category and greater media attention."
While I didn't like the continual media coverage of said storm, it did provide a respite from news about a certain politician.

Turns out they have recieved over 30 inches of rain in some places. (Swansboro, N.C.) And guess what, it's usually not the wind that kills. And BTW, you should probably keep posting in the soapbox.

Very much this. An uptick in windshear screwed up Flo's last eyewall replacement cycle, leaving it with a fubarred eye and much lower peak winds in the very center of the storm. That happened to late to do more than very slightly reduce the outer 90 or so percent's ability to dump massive amounts of water on the ground and would've had a minimal effect on the outer wind speeds prior to the it going ashore and interactions with land starting to break the storm up. Had the windshear hit a few days earlier and abated Flo would've rebuilt it's eye and ramped back to a cat 4, OTOH if it hit a few days earlier and sustained itself it would have significantly weakened the storm overall and made it much less damaging instead of just clipping down a single headline number.

it's not about the wind, troll - it's the rain and the storm surge. Wilmington is a city of 250K people and there is no land access to it right now. some rivers are expected to crest more than 10m above flood level tomorrow.

So, you think that all of this is "overblown"? Or would you rather the message from forcasters and the media be "under-reported" from actual conditions so you can have more people dead from the storm? I, for one, would rather over-prepare for the disaster than scramble at the last minute to try and gather supplies and/or get the out to safety when it's too late. Go read up on hurricane deaths in the past and you'll, hopefully, come to the conclusion that today people would rather be over-prepare and take action earlier for a storm that fizzles out than end up dead in a box for a storm that, by media standards, was "no big deal" but actually turned out worse than reported.

Well, it's either going to be over-reported or under-reported. Very rarely is a weather event, and it's impacts, ever reported "dead on". You're complaining that it's over-reported, so that leaves the only other option.
