I've never read 1984 but I've seen it mentioned and referred to many times here. I think I get the idea of what the book is about. So, I decided to buy it. US Postal tracking number says they tried to deliver it last Tuesday but at my request they are holding it. I did not request that. I contacted support via their web form Tuesday night and have not heard back from them. Coincidence? Or do they not want me to read it?

I read it back in and around 1988. Be prepared for a dark read, there is absolutely nothing cheerful or positive in the story - that said it is a rather fascinating read and Orwell does write well.

He wrote it in 48 which is where the 84 comes come; 48 switched. It was published in 49 though. *waits for Mark_Wallace to come along telling me I'm wrong without providing any evidence then accusing me of not even having read the book*

Yes you need to read it, if only to be able to say you are well read. I do also recommend Fahrenheit 451. I liked Brave New World better than 1984 and no one ever seems to mention it.

You read Brave New World by Huxley? That one's another one that deserves a read in these times. My personal "best of" order for dystopian novels is: 1984 (George Orwell) Brave New World (Aldous Huxley) Farenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury) Animal Farm (George Orwell) Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand)*** Anthem (Ayn Rand) *** Atlas Shrugged is an outlier on this list; it's not a straight-up dystopian future story, and a lot of people don't like the politics behind Atlas Shrugged, but it's worth a read, for sure. It's also kind of a bear at over 1,000 pages.

He only wrote that for the money, he regrets that it was published. He feels that way about a few of his books I believe.
I remember reading "Animal Farm", and "1984", then borrowing a couple more of his from the library as he was clearly a good writer. Then I got as far as "Aspiradista" and never read another thing by him. :laugh:

When you finally get it. And when you finally read it. You'll have learned about "DoubleThink". It's so alive and well in the last couple of years it's astounding . . . and maddening.

I've read every fiction he has done (including some non-fiction), and 1984 is his only proper "great" work. He does write very well and his books often have flashes of genius, I don't think he ever met his full potential.

You read Brave New World by Huxley? That one's another one that deserves a read in these times. My personal "best of" order for dystopian novels is: 1984 (George Orwell) Brave New World (Aldous Huxley) Farenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury) Animal Farm (George Orwell) Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand)*** Anthem (Ayn Rand) *** Atlas Shrugged is an outlier on this list; it's not a straight-up dystopian future story, and a lot of people don't like the politics behind Atlas Shrugged, but it's worth a read, for sure. Lots of what is in the book is happening right now : Driving of people's thinking (today through Google, Amazon and co being your reference search engine and driving your life's choices), watching and recording people (OK Google, Alexa, ... People are even buying telescreens - in the book they were forced into everybody's place), the fake news, the public shaming on social networks, new language, etc... Interesting, but creepy.

It's at the publisher's now, so I'm working on a sequel, rather than just twiddle my thumbs.
