In Los Angeles, Houses on postage-stamp-sized lots and with less than 2000 square feet (and that don't even have central air/heat) are selling for $700,000+. I moved from San Diego (where prices are comparable to those in L.A.) to Texas, and bought a 2200 sqft house on 3/4 acre for less than $109,000. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 "You won't like me when I'm angry..." - Dr. Bruce Banner Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends
Certainly real estate prices can be pretty daunting to home buyers, especially all the first time buyers. I live in a quiet, quaint little town of Bowmanville, Ontario and it stuns me that houses in our neighbourhood sell in excess $225K CAD ($170K USD). Coincidentally, I just received my tax bill yesterday for a cottage property my wife and I own. The township values it at $150K for assesment purposes. Not a bad investment, considering we bought it for $22K in 1985. :-O Chris Meech "what makes CP different is the people and sense of community, things people will only discover if they join up and join in." Yeah, prices in Kentucky are pretty reasonable too. You pay a little more if you're in a city (e.g., Lexington), but you can still get a 1300-1400 square foot place on a decent sized lot for $100K or less. If you go out in the country, you can get that same house on like 20 acres for the same price. :omg: "When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. I visited a buddy up on Long Island, NY. about 30 min. from Manhattan, and he rents a house thats about 1800-2000 ft2, and virtually no yard. It's in some disrepair, and goes for about $450-500K. Tax assessments don't seem to have anything to do with the market value. I live in Houston. Yes, it's bloody hot in Texas, specially during summer. You have to have AC on your house. The temperature can get up to 100. Otherwise, it is a nice place to live, people here are nice, the living expense is low, the housing price is really reasonable.

But does that take in account of the Tornado relocation fees ;) All seriousness aside, that is a cheap price for tumbleweeds ;) Rocky Moore <><

I liked the grocery stores called Fiesta, very fresh fruits and vegetables. :) Housing is relatively cheap, but property tax is high.

In defense of Nish: 'Prolly' - Literally wrong, but phonetically correct (in terms of English street slang). I have often when writing to close friends, use phonetic or SMS spelling instead of the 'correct' Queen's English. I know what i'm on about, they know what i'm on about, no harm done.

In the main city area for USD 109K you would prolly be able to buy about 1/5 acre of land (just the land, no house) Nish p.s. What's the sub unit for an acre? Here I have heard people use cents as in 1 acre = 100 cents. But it feels somehow incorrect

Nishant S wrote: What's the sub unit for an acre? We don't usually use subunits when discussing land here. You use either a fraction of an acre, or square feet. Surveying is done by marking off square miles of land, called sections. One acre is 1/640 of a section, or 43,560 square feet. City lots are usually between 5,000 and 7,000 square feet.
