Question for Australians

Thanks. I'm not one that has ever been too interested in politics so the statement about attacking westerners and then it being Australians definitely seemed strange to me. Ok. The "smiling bomber" was conficted today[^] in Indonesia for the bombing of a nightclub last year that killed 202 people - many of them Australian tourists. The bomber stated that his motive was to attack "Westerners". Now the last time I checked Australia, was nowhere near the west. However, when I think of the east and "eastern politics" I typically think of countries such as India, China, North Korea, etc. Is Australia considered "western" at least as far as her politics are concerned? Thats when all the whiteys hoped aboard the Goal Express, the chaps in charge then decided to see what was down under the Earth and headed for it's current position. They must have dinged into South Africa at one point because lord do we have a beef with them. Next time they head past we are sending our swimming team over to give them hell. Seriously though... from all the Aussies I have met I would say it is the west but without business suits.

I keep forgetting to ask my uncle who has lived down there for 35 years or so now. I loved it when that whole argument about The Queen being sovereign was raging. The scariest part of me adjusting to London is going to be ditching my t-shirt and shorts routine for a black suit and cattle-truck-tube routine. If I squint really hard and drink lots of warm beer I can understand the logic of suits in winter... but mein gott it is insanity to persist with suits during a London summer.

I wouldn't say suit wearing was the norm in the UK software industry. It's only likely if you meet customers or work for the software section of a bank. My wife reckons that Australia is more strict on suit wearing and smart dress.

The best part of writing the book was all the cool stuff we learned :-) Initially there is a thinking that can creep in that .NET will just add to the bulk; but soon the versatility available through exposing the entire BCL to your MFC apps would stun you :-) It did stun me, as it did Tom who's certainly no newbie at this stuff.
