    Hey wait! Don't throw that out! I pay good money for cheese like that. The French squash all their old offcuts into a bag, label it roquefort and sell it to me. Love the stuff.         Nonononono. Roquefort is a controlled origin appellation, and can be made in Roquefort only. All the others are fake, even if they stink smell as the original.

              Daniel! My long lost brother of taste! Man we have to have a cheese evening. I love all those cheeses. Oh dear... now I am getting peckish... soon I will have blocks of roquefort floating before my minds eye and I will just have to go break the bank on some (as well as brie, cam and all those wonderful cheeses).                 :rolleyes: You French are awfully insecure about your products. Champagne, Port and now Roquefort. These products should speak for themselves and not require legislation to attract coneseurs. Saying that, I would love to try some genuine roquefort one day.                           It's all about tradition. We believe these products are not only the result of a mix of ingredients, but also the result of a specific part of the country, because of its specific soil and climate. These products have geographical names (Champagne is a region, North East to Paris, Roquefort is a small town in South West of France, and what the heck is 'port'?), it's not a coincidence. Several wines could fit with Roquefort: a white wine from Alsace like a Gewurztraminer or something sweeter like a Sauternes, or a tannic red wine, like a Cahors (not too old) or a Madiran. You'll have to taste all of them. If you want to change for another cheese, we have 400 different ones :) What food product does SA export?

                            A friend and I were talking about the brazilian beef meat, and we both agreed it was one of the best we ever ate. A question was however unresolved: Are growth hormones used on the cattle?

AFAIK, almost not anymore, although there is no law against it: IIRC, about 10 years ago, there has been this national movement against hormones on the cattle, and a brazilian research company, Embrapa, has created some soy-based diet complements that are so much cheaper than hormones, that they were banned from use.                                     Oh Karl, my apologies. I was being facetious with you as the matter is a prickly one and not worth getting worked up over. I do understand that Champagne and Roquefort are more than just a process and external producers using the names you have built up over centuries is a bit harsh. My sister adores the French and I have promised to take her to Champagne and other parts of France one day. As for SA we do produce world class wine and cheese. The area I live in, the Cape, is particularly good with many wine routes and good vineyards. As for original products... hmm, I doubt boerewors and biltong count.                                       LOL Turini. There is one very good lateral advantage of roquefort; If you love it and you have it on your pizza you won't have any problems from friends picking at your pizza. I have tried a similar technique on my pudding but alas roquefort and sorbet do not mix.                                           I vote a fiver! One of the most successful fundraisers we ran this year was a wine and cheese party. $20 for all the wine and cheese you'd care to sample, and in all we raised $8600 to help the local high school build a decent gym. Delicious! Roquefort is a bit pungent, but quite delicious. Bleu cheese is more suited to daily consumption, though all cheeses are delicious!:-D "My Fridge Science Experiment can beat up your Fridge Science Experiment."
