Are you a professional programmer?
-
I'm curious about this from the point of view of recent comments on open source, offshore development, "M$", professionalism etc. If your skills as (primarily) a programmer are putting a roof over your head and food in your belly vote 5, if it's a hobby / course of study / pastime etc vote 1.
I support two teams: the Canucks and whoever is playing the Leafs!

You missed out on a). Sending your kids through university/college. b). Paying your ex his/her monthly pound of flesh. c). Keeping a roof over your parents heads, cause nursing homes ain't cheap. d). Donate to the tax pool so the government can waste more of your money. But still a good poll. :-D Chris Meech It's much easier to get rich telling people what they want to hear. Hobbiest. Up until now I have only written stuff for myself or for immediate family although I am currently working on my first paid app. One of my suppliers saw something I wrote for myself and he liked it so much he wanted to be able to distribute to all his customers. So now I am rewriting it to make it configurable as the original was a quick hack that had everything hardcoded to my particular setup.

Don't know. Used to be: 5 Now: 2 Company got bought out which sells some crappy product written in a language called Magic-- I'm now a computer lacky who copies files from one directory to another for our level 2 support people because the whole 'mouse/keyboard thing' is programmer work... right? My professional life is hell. Don't hate me for it. Anyone hiring? Paul
Paul Oss wrote: crappy product written in a language called Magic I've just spent the last year re-writing a Magic app and converting it to a Windows app... Fortunately, I didn't have to actually get involved in any of the Magic code - I just wrote a completely new app by listening to the users complaints and the sort of work they needed to perform. I would often hear things like this: "How many xyz's will we be able to store? Magic only let us have 3, so we use the comments field to store really important data". X| My response was usually something like this: "As many as you like. There is no limit." (You gotta love relational databases ;) ) Anyway, I feel your pain, but here's some (possibly) good news... If you live anywhere near the Central Valley (California) and you know anything about Magic, then there's a position opening up. Friday is my last day.

If you live anywhere near the Central Valley (California) and you know anything about Magic, then there's a position opening up. Friday is my last day. No, and no. I'm up in Seattle, and I don't know anything--well, I know little of substance about magic. I don't program in magic, a small group at the corporate hq do. I've seen the resulting products from Magic, and although I'm hesitant to blame all the techical problems on magic as much as I am the 'programmers' themselves. I will say that I'm not overly impressed with the results of magic based products. My problem (which could be a blessing) is that I work on the older products (which work) which have to make way for the newer products (which kind of work- in some areas) and I have no intention of learning Magic. I've personally experienced (and am experiencing) what it's like to be locked into a pit of niche technology and just how hard you have to scratch and dig to get out of that pit. Paul

yes; Since graduating from the amateur ranks, I've been hired by "Programmers On Ice". We will be touring North America in a few weeks to showcase our new mascots, CP Bob, BSD Evil and the Linux Penguin. You should see me doing a double-axel, and a double Lutz, but my spinning is not up to par. ;P

The really sad thing is that depending upon who you read/listen to some say the players will strike, and others say the owners are going to lock them out. So it seems that regardless of who is right, we may not have any hockey next fall. :(( :(( Chris Meech It's much easier to get rich telling people what they want to hear.
