Hobbiest. Up until now I have only written stuff for myself or for immediate family although I am currently working on my first paid app. One of my suppliers saw something I wrote for myself and he liked it so much he wanted to be able to distribute to all his customers. So now I am rewriting it to make it configurable as the original was a quick hack that had everything hardcoded to my particular setup.

Don't know. Used to be: 5 Now: 2 Company got bought out which sells some crappy product written in a language called Magic-- I'm now a computer lacky who copies files from one directory to another for our level 2 support people because the whole 'mouse/keyboard thing' is programmer work... right? My professional life is hell. Don't hate me for it. Anyone hiring? Paul

I'm curious about this from the point of view of recent comments on open source, offshore development, "M$", professionalism etc. If your skills as (primarily) a programmer are putting a roof over your head and food in your belly vote 5, if it's a hobby / course of study / pastime etc vote 1.

I'm up in Seattle, and I don't know anything--well, I know little of substance about magic. I don't program in magic, a small group at the corporate hq do. I've seen the resulting products from Magic, and although I'm hesitant to blame all the techical problems on magic as much as I am the 'programmers' themselves. I will say that I'm not overly impressed with the results of magic based products. My problem (which could be a blessing) is that I work on the older products (which work) which have to make way for the newer products (which kind of work- in some areas) and I have no intention of learning Magic. I've personally experienced (and am experiencing) what it's like to be locked into a pit of niche technology and just how hard you have to scratch and dig to get out of that pit. Paul

The really sad thing is that depending upon who you read/listen to some say the players will strike, and others say the owners are going to lock them out. So it seems that regardless of who is right, we may not have any hockey next fall. :(( :(( Chris Meech It's much easier to get rich telling people what they want to hear. Magic. The "RAD" tool? Originally from Israel? Ack!! I used to maintain a custom ERP package in that stuff, using a BTrieve DB. They wouldn't even get upgrades after v5.0, which was still all DOS-based. now I'm happily flipping bits in assembly. :sigh:
