:-D Speaking of hockey.. Kris Draper wants our major hockey league [swedish] to call him up. Apparently, he wants to play here in case the NHLPA calls for strike next fall. It would be kind of cool if more follows. :) -- The coolest game in the world: NHL Hockey[^]

Don't know. Used to be: 5 Now: 2 Company got bought out which sells some crappy product written in a language called Magic-- I'm now a computer lacky who copies files from one directory to another for our level 2 support people because the whole 'mouse/keyboard thing' is programmer work... right? My professional life is hell. Don't hate me for it. Anyone hiring? Paul
Magic. The "RAD" tool? Originally from Israel? Ack!! I used to maintain a custom ERP package in that stuff, using a BTrieve DB. They wouldn't even get upgrades after v5.0, which was still all DOS-based. now I'm happily flipping bits in assembly. :sigh:

From my observation, it's slower than Java, more bloated than, well, something very bloated, is 'platform independent' so the products that I've seen are highly non standard in interface and intuition. Its multithreading support is either non-existent or our 'magic' programmers don't implement it (cancel's during long jobs either never get processed, or get processed minutes after the button's been hit). It's one of those technologies that I actually don't want to get near for fear it might pass on some disease that will be very hard to get rid of. Paul

Wow I thought Magic was dead... It was great in 1991... I had never seen something so easy to use but then Access came along...

I'm curious about this from the point of view of recent comments on open source, offshore development, "M$", professionalism etc. If your skills as (primarily) a programmer are putting a roof over your head and food in your belly vote 5, if it's a hobby / course of study / pastime etc vote 1.

I guess I have to say 4. Been coding for money since 93. As the years have gone on I have spent less time coding for a hobby and more time coding for work. It's to the point now, that I spend so much time working that I don't care to work with a pc when I don't have to. Luckily, I find my work fun and enjoyable, but I don't want to do it 24 hours a day anymore. A wife and kid will do that to you.
