MS Security Updates on CD
-
That is especially troubling since it appears that nothing has come of it so far as far as Microsoft products are concerned. I personally keep my systems clean using a free anti-virus product. I do think it is obscene that regular users like my parents need to spend more on software to protect their systems then the software that they use on their systems. All they need is email and web browsing that is cheap easy to use. I just think that security including utilities to detect and cleanup viruses should be part of any OS. -Andy Brummer

Only when I go hunting for you. I still haven't figured out how to fix my PC after the last crash, so it's running in crippled mode right now. Heard in Bullhead City - "You haven't lost your girl -

Yup yup. I'm thinking how handy that's going to be when I visit customers who don't have a clue what an update is. I can bring them more or less up to date in minutes, instead of hours, and with any luck I'll be able to selectively install fixes to minimize the number of crashes they create. I think it is worth it for their reputation. I also think MS should provide free anti-virus software with live updates as a free service as well. The costs of a 3 year subscription to Norton or McAfee just about cost more then the OS. -Andy Brummer
They did a deal with Computer Associates so you can get a personal firewall (think Zone Alarm) and anti-virus free for a year. Go here. Pick your OS, pick "use detailed steps", get to step 3 and notice you can get anti-virus from Computer Associates 12 months for free. If you're in a non-commercial environment and want anti-virus longer than 12 months, I recommend this one.
I, for one, do not think the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

oh, another case for misuse of market dominance.

Probably nothing will help, but I'm still thinking about it. It told me at startup that it can no longer open the AD database, and it couldn't locate security identifiers. It refused to let me log on - the admin logon was no longer valid. So now it runs in Safe Mode only, and many processes no longer start. Active Directory has ceased running, the DNS system no longer has any entries in it, and it has "unjoined" its own domain and refuses to play domain controller anymore. This from a cold start after a normal shutdown over a weekend. Go figure... The firewall is still running, nothing unnatural is being logged in IIS, and antivirus software still works (though it has ceased autoupdating every day). One nice discovery about Win2K Server is that it functions normally in Safe Mode as a workstation - unlike any previous version. I'll probably have to reinstall everything to restore it, but it's going to take weeks to capture stuff I need that will be wiped out. I'm gradually locating all the service packs, install modules, registration codes and such that I'll need to rebuild it and putting them all on another drive for future use. It's still going to be a mess of work, but preparation will minimize that. I don't dare restart again, for fear that this hiatus is really only a fluke, until I have everything ready to rebuild it.:sigh: Heard in Bullhead City - "You haven't lost your girl -

Is that worth for MS? Totaly free. :~ Mazy You're face to face, With the man who sold the world - David Bowie
If AOL can do it why wouldn't Microsoft be able to pull it off? Signature under construction.

At the time I built this PC, I was still employed. They required me to build a WinNT network for them, but refused to provide any training or tools, and constantly harrangued me about the 'features' I never could make work. At the time, they were considering migrating to Win2K, and I knew they would pull the same crap on me again - requiring me to pull a technological hat out of a rabbit with no tools or knowledge to work with. So I decided then to buy the server edition instead of the pro version, and attempt to learn on my own before being required by idiots to be an instant expert without benefit of any kind of support. It didn't work out - they laid me off and dissolved my position, instead. Last I heard, they no longer could even email between offices...:-D Heard in Bullhead City - "You haven't lost your girl -

There is a good political reason why MS never did that (anti-virus embedded with the OS). You know that anti-virus updates are sent to you every other day or so, this would have hurt the image of a software supplier, and would have made MS smell like a spammer. At some point, I believe people would consider alternatives to MS, at least more than they do these days.

Uhm.. and how big is the market for antivirus programs on the Mac and Linux? :) -- Meine Welt ist monoton und minimal, doch ganz total!
> and how big is the market for antivirus programs on the Mac and > Linux? You can't deny the Linux market is growing, right? As an anti-virus maker, when would you want to get involved? When the market is growing, and be the first one on the block providing a solution, or when it's already saturated by competitors? I dunno, I'm just a dumb coder. All I know is that if I was to start writing antivirus software, the Linux market would be a lot more attractive right now than the Windows market.
