Why not? I can love (agape) my neighbor without liking (phileo) him one bit. When Jesus commanded us to love our neighbor as ourselves, he was instructing us to agape them. Agape is the unconditional love for everybody that flows from one's character and, as such, has nothing to do with liking the receiver. I can say that I absolutely despise someone, and still love (agape) them.

Quick, someone pass me the sick bag... Besides, should we not separate church and code?
Stoopid signatures...
Okay...regardless of whether or not you agree that Jesus told us to do this, you can't disagree with the interpretation of the greek words for love. The Greeks separated love into three words: agape, phileo, and eros. Agape is unconditional love that you have for everybody. It flows from your character and is dependent solely on you. Phileo is conditional, friendship love. You phileo your family, friends, etc. It's conditional...meaning that if someone pisses you off royally, they could lose that phileo you have for them. And then there's eros, which is a passionate desire-type of love. You would eros your wife, girlfriend, car, whatever you really want. These concepts aren't even "Christian"...the greeks were considered the gentiles (pagans) in the day of Christ. The fact is that their language separates the concept of love much clearer than English does. I'm sure there are other langauges that have a much more complete expression of love as well. So what exactly makes you so sick about this? [EDIT] And besides...there's no code in the Lounge...so we are keeping church and code separate. ;)

Right...but that interpretation assumes that Jesus was talking about Phileo-ing someone. Which he clearly was not. Agape is unconditional and flows from your character. If you have a stronger character, you will have more agape. The phileo love is conditional and would best be described as the friendship love. I can have very low phileo for someone (say, a criminal who attacks my family), but still have agape for them merely because of the fact that they're a human being. Christ didn't command us to like everybody on the face of the planet. That would be impossible. Are we supposed to like Hitler, Mussolini, Hussein, etc? No. But we do have agape love for them based solely on the fact that they're human.

Jumping in from Roger's thread above, this is one of those concepts that makes me wish i'd spent some time learning other languages - English at times seems to hamstring thought as well as speech.
Indeed. English seems to be lacking in a few areas. The idea of love happens to be one of them. The word love is so overused because it's the only thing that we can use to express a variety of separate topics. As I said, the greeks have three words for love: agape, phileo, and eros. And they separate out quite distinctly the various applications of "love". We really only have "love", but I guess you could throw in "like" too. Oh, and there's the ever-popular-with-the-high-school-crowd, "in love". And all three of those words are so similar and similarly abused that, to have any hope of interpreting what someone means when they use them, you need lots of explanation as to what the nature of the relationship is, what their intentions are, etc.

David Stone wrote: Christ didn't command us to like everybody on the face of the planet... It is very simple to find out. It is in your first quote, loving your neighbor as yourself. If the only love you have for myself is Agape, then you have a point. I have all three for myself. David Stone wrote: Are we supposed to like Hitler, Mussolini, Hussein, etc? No. Interesting list, I hope President Bush is in the "etc". Anyway to your question, the answer to me is Yes. It will be difficult for you and that is human, but for your "supposed to", it is Yes. Best regards, Paul. Jesus Christ is LOVE! Please tell somebody.

I hate Apple just enough to not care abuot this. Mostly because I hate Steve Jobs, but also because I've found my iPod to be an unreliable device at the best of times. I'm selling it on ebay and buying an iRiver. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

It actually is quite buddhist. I was discussing that with my pastor one day. He claimed that without the Holy Spirit, one could not fully achieve the facets of love listed in 1 Corinthians 13. I went up to him after the sermon and got him to acknowledge that the buddhists have similar principles and that a buddhist priest could indeed devote his entire life to studying love and become that loving. My pastor corrected himself the next week. :)

Really? Would you still "love" me if I told you what I really think about christianity? ;)

According to the Bible, there you will not be forgiven. Anyway, speaking your mind freely is good and will help me know how to pray for you. Jesus will still love you, and who am I not to? David Stone wrote: buddhist priest could indeed devote his entire life to studying love and become that loving That doesn't mean Christ isn't involved. Everyone has the light of Christ from birth regardless of who they are. That is the reason everyone knows inately what is right or wrong (for most things).
