IS LAUREN A BIGOT?
-
I've got news for you ... I am deeply religious in the context that I firmly believe in God ... but in no way did I find Lauren's posting and/or remarks nearly as offensive as your spouting off and use of profane verbiage in the lounge, which, by-the-way, is supposed to be Kid sister safe. Go wash your mouth out, and if you have something worthwhile to say, then say it. All she did was post a link to a story; nothing more. :|

posting anti-religous crap is bigotry in action
I am a Christian, a very devout one. As far as I can see, telling Lauren she's not allowed to have an opinion that is different to mine would make me a bigot. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

Is idiot a name? Not that I am, but would I be name calling if I were to call you that? Or would it be considered "factual"? ;P
That would depend on whether or not I really am an idiot. If I'm not an idiot, than it would be name calling. If I am an idiot, that would be factual. Lauren says and does things that are normally attributed to someone who is a bigot. Therefore that makes her a bigot. If she doesn't like the truth, then she has power to change the truth. She can stop being a bigot. It's her choice.

She did more than criticize an institution, she smeared everyone who believes in god when she made her post. Not only in the title of her post ("god goes to the dogs") but also in the article linked to. It was an obvious smear, attack and slime on religious people.
Again, I disagree. You seem to take criticism of your religion very personally. This is understandable, of course -- one's religious beliefs are a deeply personal thing -- but you'll go through life an angry, defensive person if you view every disagreement as an attack. If you can distance yourself from it just a bit -- from the discussion, not from your faith, of course -- and perhaps think of it as concerning belief systems rather than people, you might not be as tempted to lash out, and might be able to either go with it or just let it go. I am not religious, but subscribe to Taoist philosophy, and have had some wonderful discussions with people of all faiths and philosophies. The debates are sometimes heated, mostly reasoned, and usually benefit from having either sake or good Belgian ale involved in the process. Ad hominem attacks merely decrease the value of one's other contributions to the discussion and usually subject the attacker to hoots of derision and buying the next round. I don't think anybody's fundamental belief system has ever been restructured, but everyone seems to come away a little bit enlightened -- philosophically, spiritually, intellectually, or inebriatedly.

I never said she can't have an opinion different than mine. Not that she needs my permission, but she can have and hold whatever opinions she wants to. But, if she, or anyone else for that matter, chooses to espouse those opinions, then it is incumbent upon that opinion holder/espouser to be able defend such opinions with thoughful, reasoned arguments. When opinions are made such that an entire class of people are denigrated, then that is not just an opinion, it becomes a stereotype. If someone were to say "green people are lazy" that certainly is an opionion, but it also makes that person a bigot when they hold to an opinion that is so easily disproved. So it is with lauren, she holds that religion causes bad stuff and posts a link of dubious quality to support such a dubious "opinion." When it is pointed out that the article she posted linked to is of poor quality she goes on the offensive and rather than apologize she attacks the individual.

A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a medical classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive. [Middle English, ignorant person, from Old French idiote, from Latin idita, from Greek idits, private person, layman, from idios, own, private. See s(w)e- in Indo-European Roots.]
It is interesting to note that its use as a slang term, deliberately to be offensive changed a medical classification system to drop the use of the term. For all the complaints of PC movement now, it has been happening as part of our language since the invention of language. The original term means a private person, someone who is incapable of learning to deal with a larger world, or a person with autism which would be trapped in a private world, and was an appropriate descriptive term until it was used as an insult. An idiot savant was not an oxymoron until the adoption of slang it was a person with gifted computational capability, an enherant rather than learned ability, yet without the capability of learning social/interactive or any other skills already in possession past the equivalent age of 3. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I have never got the impression that Lauren has trouble defending her position. I believe her that in this case, she thought the link was funny. Just because it isn't to you ( or me ), doesn't mean it wasn't to her. Why not just take her at her word, instead of making yourself look bad with this carry on ? ahz wrote: People cause bad stuff and often hide behind their religion to justify it. Christian Graus wrote: The Crusades, the KKK, Nazi Germany, child abuse by clery, Without going into this Laureen discussion, what religion caused Nazi Germany? Nazi means national socialism and they were driven by nationalism, not any religion. In fact, they were often quoting Darwin theory as a justification for their actions.
