And where was the insult? I was stating my opinion. Now on the other hand telling someone to "go to hell" can not be interpreted as anything more than an insult to the person it was directed at, not an opinion.

You asking the new American why he would want to live here and insulting the country is an insult dressed up as an opinion, a lousy one too. I don't care for you smart ass remarks.

No, I asked why he chose to become a citizen, not why he wanted to live here. He was already living here.

Yes, the King of England didn't care for the remarks of Jefferson, Franklin, Paine, and others, but the Declaration of Independence was signed anyway and you can see where that lead.

I mean no offense, but why would you want, or need, to be a US Citizen? As one myself, I'm ashamed of this country and the way we (in general) treat the rest of the world. BTW, I've spent about 10 years in the past living outside the US so I think I have a somewhat outsider's viewpoint.

I met a lovely old US couple on vacations. They said: "We are proud of our country, but ashamed of our government". And that's - for my outsider view - is exactly on the spot.

Having US citizenship makes it easy to travel/work around the world. That's a good enough reason for people to try and get a US citizenship :-)

Congratulations, Rob! May you always remember the feelings you had today, and continue to exercise the responsibilities as well as the rights that citizenship provides with the same grace, calm and reason that you clearly are showing here today.
