What's Microsoft up to here?

If you want to be part of a viral marketing campaign, go for it. Personally I prefer companies to simply produce a good item and then tell me about it. I'm a little over Microsoft (and to some extent, Apple) hyping everything beyond control and then coming out with...nothing special.

As much as Microsoft's marketing can become tiresome, you must remember that they are experts at it. All of there software is mediocre, but there marketing sells it. Personally I think a vast majority of their campaigns are genius.

I disagree. Their Zune campaign was attrocious and I heard even they were admitting internally it was a miss-fire.

I think the same marketing team is involved in the Vista release...

"...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001Vista hasn't really been marketed at all over here in Aus. A few days ago I speaking to a friend about problems I'm having with Vista. I was met instantly with: What is "Vista"? I told him it was the new Microsoft Operating System and he didn't even know they had a new one coming out. Even though most I.T. people will know about it, the fact that the general public doesn't even know it exists is a poor show on their part.

Yes, Zune has been a flop. I was kind of hoping they might do well with this because I am sick of IPods now. What was their strategy with Zune anyway?

Yup, the high-end road and mountain bike companies have it figured out. They swag their R & D big and they talk about new things they are doing. But the bikes themselves have great ads, great reviews and it's all pretty easy to absorb. Microsoft and Apple will be cover-boys for Vanity Fair before to much longer.

From my quick 3-minute perusal of the site and the Neowin thread, I'd say they're doing this one right. You can't do what the Zune guys did, and make a whacky video that is obviously supposed to be a viral video. People have already seen that, it won't work anymore. This time, they're doing what Google and EA have done, present a puzzle and let the geeks loose on it. Heck, just in the first page of the thread, there are guys using Fiddler and a Flash decompiler to try and figure it out. That looks like a success to me.
