Microsoft bought several graphics patents from SGI, some of which may be implemented in OpenGL. They (Microsoft) have now claimed intellectual property rights on ARB vertex shaders and maybe fragment shaders as well. They offered to license these patents "under reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms". Mark my words - this is going to effectively KILL OpenGL on ALL platforms. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

Yeah, it's been posted on slashdot and theregister, but where's the original? That's written from a third party's point of view, so it's blatantly already slanted against Microsoft. Chances are they will eventually do something like that, but there's no evidence so far - all they've done is remind people that they've got the rights. Cheers, Peter Pearson

This will also ripple down nto competing operating systems. If Linux doesn't have OpenGL, you may as well forget new games being targetted at that platform. No games, no gamers. No gamers, no home users. No home users, no Linux. No Linux, Microsoft wins. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

Don't even get me started with the Fahrenheit project. Those bastards at MS have strong-armed SGI for a while now. SGI is either going out or is close to going out of business, so I assume that's why they sold the patents. Jeremy Falcon Imputek

or maybe they just want to protect themselfes from other people patenting this or other parts of OpenGL. Every cpoin has two sides, and a rim.

To explain Donald Knuth's relevance to computing is like explaining Paul's relevance to the Catholic Church. He isn't God, he isn't the Son of God, but he was sent by God to explain God to the masses.

Actually, I can think of one other reason. It might follow what Apple did with Mac OS X. If I heard right, Apple's OS uses OpenGL to optimize their graphical user interface. MS might do the same thing and probably make a new version of GDI+ (maybe GDI++). It wouldn't be too odd of a guess considering MS did merge Direct3D and DirectDraw together to take advantage of 3D acceleration in 2D drawing. Then, you will see Internet Explorer bouncing up and down from your taskbar. :) Frank Frank@Frank-L.com http://www.Frank-L.com Los Angeles, CA, USA

Have you ever visited universities, ISPs, and pretty much any other IT-related business with a lot of networking involved? Linux is huge. It's cheap, and it gets the job done. Tasks where Linux is involved: web server, email server, dns server, file server, fire wall, computer lab (university mostly), application server (the web-pr0n industry thrives on Linux and Apache), research activities (university). I'd say it's not a religious statement in the grand scheme of things. It's getting things done cheap! Once you set up a simple dns server for instance, little or no maintainence is necessary (except for the DNS database, but you can't escape that anyhow!). TCO with Linux is low, and in most cases lower no matter what Microsoft and some "independent" analyst says. Sonorked as well: 100.13197 jorgen FreeBSD is sexy.
