I don't know about your reading habits, but it does get reported. Indeed, the article you link to is also available on the Washington Post's web site. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/25/AR2009052501132.html[^] And here is an article in the NY Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/06/fashion/06survival.html?pagewanted=print[^]

The article did not say what the political nature of those who were storing food away were, do you suspect right-wing wackjobs?

Pretty much for the same reason as I suspect the Pope of being a Catholic. It is the nature of the thing.

I like this quote from the article you referenced; Some middle-class preparedness converts, like Val Vontourne, a musician and paralegal in Olympia, Wash., recoil at the term “survivalist,” even as they stock their homes with food, gasoline and water. “I think of survivalists as being an extreme case of preparedness,” said Ms. Vontourne, 44, “people who stockpile guns and weapons, anticipating extreme aggression. Whereas what I’m doing, I think of as something responsible people do. “I now think of storing extra food, water, medicine and gasoline in the same way I think of buying health insurance and putting money in my 401k,” she said. “It just makes sense.”

also sounds a helluva lot like global warming alarmists. But making sure you can survive chaos in today's world makes a damn sight more sense than believing you can change the climate.

agreed but it is still difficult (for me, anyway) to be sneeringly critical of good instincts and taking steps to protect your family in a period of potential chaos is no more than that. it is elitist, ignorant and plain foolish to think otherwise.

It was actually a reasonable take. I don't see how there could be any controversy over people attempting to prepare for an emergency.

Are you prepared for the law requiring that, in the time of a disaster, anyone who has a survival kit must take in either a minority family, two homeless people and their shopping carts, or three governmental employees?

That all makes sense... But if all that is true, then why would democrats try so hard to build a world they could never live in? ;P [disclaimer] Given that this post is jokingly rhetorical and sarcastic, any replies will be met with only more jocular sarcasm.
