It's hard to categorize firearms. They cool be tools, toys, sporting equipment, or even sexual aids. :)

I was just discussing with a new programmer and I always install the following. Virtual Clone Drive 7-zip System Internals WinDirStat What do you use? That might be good for him. I am so used to these they are just my stand by utilities on any windows machine. http://rnbergren.blogspot.com

                            Google and sometimes Bing.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

ah Paint.net I use GIMP. But is does stand to reason that you need some picture editing tool. I also love color picker. http://www.iconico.com/colorpic/[^] I was already assuming Visual Studio and the assorted MS tools that most of us use anyway. SQL Mgmt Studio etc...

"Can't live without" is a bit too strong, but I really like to have: vim a decent debugger a decent compiler (except for interpreted languages, of course) a decent source control system OneNote (or some other decent note management system - I am not aware of anything coming close to OneNote) internet connection a decent web browser (Chrome, IE9) a decent mail/calendar/task client (Outlook is kind of OK)
