When I come to "The Code Project", for example to visit "The Lounge", there are [new] icons displayed on some of the most recent posts. I'm just wondering, out of curiosity, exactly what determines why or when a [new] icon is displayed, or not. Chris? Anyone? I'm just pondering the significance in regards to determining which posts I've read. If I click on a post and read it, then reload, it still appears as new. Any ideas as to what is going on? Is it basically just something like the last X amount of time since my last login? Or I'm not sure what else. Thanks.

Quantum MechanicsThanks!

If you knew the position of every single atom in existence at any one point in time , you could without error predict the movement of the entire universe, or the exact, and i mean EXACT path of a marble that has been hit by another marble, that was itself hit by a marble being flicked....
I believe Socrates already debated that particular argument thousands of years ago. As I understand it, QM provides the exact state of an atom cannot be determined, it can only be estimated or predicted. If so, then there is never any certainty -- thus the uncertain portion would lead to "randomness", would it not?

Quantum MechanicsDoes not the physics of QM provide for "true randomness" in the Universe? I'm debating a friend who seems to think everything is predetermined, period. My argument against, is that his proposal would be a finite machine, one which could be moved either forward or back. Additionally, my argument continues, if true randomness exists, then it can't be predetermined nor undone. Am I incorrect? Any thoughts?

Retro comedyA few years ago, we had a water line break in our yard, called a plumber who came out, and he needed to turn off the water valve in the garage ... after doing so, he said ... "Typical ... you've got $40,000 dollars of vehicles in the driveway and $200 of crap in the garage." Oh man, he was sooooo right. Sigh. I blame it on my wife. ;)

[Message Deleted] [modified]I would assume it's probably just a chaotic pattern. It's like if you go to a roulette wheel, and wait (as long as it takes) for it to hit Red 10 times in a row ... you would think, if you then bet Black next you'd have an advantage ... but you don't. It's still the same odds.

Batch Image Processing ToolHi, I'm looking for suggestions of a good free batch image processing tool. I have a few thousand images (24-bit color print scanned documents) that I need convert to a smaller standardized width/height for screen display. Auto-crop might be necessary (so all the pages are the same size, instead of some sort of stretching or resizing). And I'll need to sharpen the end results to some degree. Then finally save in JPEG or PNG format. I have, and use, Photoshop CS2 -- however I tend to have problems getting File > Automate > Batch to do exactly what I want. Just wondering if there is something easier available? Thanks for any suggestions! Regards.

QuestionI've used Codejock's Toolkits for years ... and have various MFC-based works that I've created and am pondering sharing ... I'm wondering, though, if I wrote an article (and let's assume it was okay or even good) ... would I get reamed for requiring a commercial product to compile it? For example, one is a pretty good clone of Internet Explorer 6 (with extras like tabbed browsing, popup blocking, automatically filling out forms, etc). However, I used Codejock to assist with the UI. It would take a lot of work to clean up the code, and write an article ... and it would probably take more than one article to explain everything ... but if in the end I'm just going to get killed for requiring Codejock to compile, that doesn't seem to make much sense for the effort. What do you think? Is it okay to post a project that requires a commercial 3rd party library to compile?

Sender Policy FrameworkI have a dedicated server at ServerBeach and run MailEnable Professional ... I use it for about a dozen domains ... Lately I've been getting a TON of bounce backs, and such from spam forging my domain in the "From", "Return-Path", etc. (Over 1,000 a day). And I'm trying to figure out what to do about this as it has become almost unmanageable. I'm sure my SMTP server is secured. Here's my question ... Does anyone have any feedback in regards to enabling SPF? Do you think this would this be a good idea or not? Are there drawbacks to it? I can't afford to lose mail from legitimate clients, however if I lost one or two it probably wouldn't matter that much (I hope). Anyway, any thoughts on whether I should enable SPF or not would be greatly appreciated ... Thanks!
