  • What is your C64?

My first computer was during that time, too. It was a Texas Instruments TI-99/4a. Spent countless hours typing in TI-Basic. They had a magazine, too, with games you could type in line-by-line. They didn’t always work. And there was no reliable way to save them. So you basically just left it on and played as long as you could. Then deleted and started the next game. I didn’t care, it was my first programming experience and I enjoyed it. I also remember doing loops, alternating between a color and black. Yes, I turned that big old monitor into a strobe light! Lol! What do you expect, I was between 10-13 when I had that computer. I had fun hacking away in TI-Basic.

I agree that we shouldn't be answering such questions as if they were posed by colleagues, but instead, that we should be answering those questions as if we were mentoring new initiates. This suggests that we need to have a separate forum for such questions where expectations are set appropriately for both sides.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Have a separate forum for beginners with a set code-of-conduct to encourage them, not belittle them. It's hard enough to be a beginner trying to learn then to also have to deal with disrespect.

  • Do You Think ASP.NET has a Future?
    A Alexander DiMauro

It has a future, but it's moving towards using more of the Web API and then writing a Web frontend on top of it. Which, when you look at it that way, isn't really very different from most other common platforms. The latest version of MVC that is coming out is really pushing this API backend with a general HTML/CSS/JavaScript frontend. So, yes, it has a future and is relevant. This is exactly how I've been using it for a while now, haven't even written any Razor code in a couple of years. Things like Webforms don't really translate too well, but I have been working with .NET for 8 years and never once worked on a Webforms project. It's really not necessary to spend too much time learning it, unless the company you want to work for specifically asks for it.

    A Alexander DiMauro

Both at work and home, I have parallels with Visual Studio. No trouble, has been running great for more than 2 years now. I did have to re-program some of the keyboard shortcuts at work, I use ReSharper and Mac keyboards don't have an 'Insert' key, which is used a lot with ReSharper. But, that's only a minor issue. At home I bought an external keyboard that does have an Insert key.

Never had the 10-hour experience before, so not sure how 'normal' it is. When a new OS releases, it can be slow if you try to get it on release day, but not 10 hours slow. At least, not in my experience. The latest XCode was a more than 3GB download, and only took about 15 minutes. So, no, I don't really think that is 'normal'. Yes, dual boot, and with parallels desktop. Mainly got a Mac because I am now doing iOS development, but still am a .NET programmer.

  • Everyones favourite Kids Show

Personally, I think he's 'rocking' it (pun intended) in series 9. The story lines were a bit weak in series 8, and I think Capaldi didn't really come fully into the part quite yet. But so far, these first few have been awesome, and Capaldi is really getting into it now. He even said he didn't feel comfortable in the Tardis last series, and they redesigned it to fit him better. Even bringing back the round panels, which is awesome. It just took him a little while to make the part his own, but I think so far he has succeeded in series 9.

  • Has anyone landed job because they have a LinkedIN account?
    A Alexander DiMauro

Well, when you say 'landed a job', do you mean actually being contacted by a company? Then, no. But, LinkedIn is FULL of recruiters. And I have been contacted by recruiters on LinkedIn that then led to jobs. That's actually how I got my last 3 jobs. But, if I'm not looking for work, then LinkedIn is absolutely useless, as it seems that 99% of all my communications on LinkedIn are all from recruiters. They are pretty relentless, like vultures, and it's really annoying. I don't ever really go on there and ignore all requests to connect unless I'm looking for work. I do have connections there with ACTUAL friends and colleagues, but, we NEVER have discussions on LinkedIn. I tried going on some of the interest groups and having conversations with other programmers, but, the recruiters and/or freelancers always seem to take over the conversation. It usually goes something like this: Initial poster: "I have a question about [insert programming question]" Responses: "Oh, I have 10 years experience in [insert technology] and competitive rates, I would be happy to take care of that for you!" (Same response a few dozen times from different people) No, they asked for help with a programming question NOT for someone to do it for them (for a fee). Just ANSWER the question! LinkedIn is full of vultures, and I find it impossible to have any sort of actual programming discussion there. Maybe it's changed, maybe some groups are better than others, but, for the most part I stay away and have actual discussions elsewhere.
