This tends to make me think it's not about the language, but rather the tools. Like 15 years ago Dreamweaver was the choice of Professional web developers and <1>Front Page marked you as a rank amateur. The truth was that using FP allowed people to do "Right Click Development" of code that they didn't know how to. Now today I am using Visual Studio and I see all of the questions here and mostly S/O on this or that problem when using Entity Framework or LinqToSql... And the push of the Code First approach having VS create a database strongly reminds me of that scorned "Right Click Development"

Absolutely, in many ways MS Research is the closest thing we have now to the Xerox Parc and MIT labs of old. Projects like Singularity (a clean slate O/S) and Phoenix (a compilation platform) really did break ground. And, just like Parc, they seem to be failing to capatilize on the potential. HoloLens though looks awesome - potentially one of the most transformative technologies in my lifetime. C# or rather the .Net runtime does a number of things to make code "safer". These are things like bounds checking, type safety, etc. Some of that happens at compile time, but of necessity a lot of it happens at run time. This obviously takes time. Much of it can be "turned off" if you want to though you may not want to. If you want very tight control of timing then C++ and likely straight C is a better bet. For a variety of problems .Net (and therefore C#) is performant enough and "safer" than C or C++. It is good to have options. Pat O

Apparently there are more than a couple books out now specifically addressing development for massive multiplayer games. You should start by reading several of them.

You don't even begin to realise how high the hourly rate works out to. Consider that all database reorganisations require days and days of computer time when no other work can be done. This means that the DBAs work only during long holidays, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day or Thanksgiving and the rest of the year they are twiddling their thumbs. Consider that even on these days the work consists of starting the Unload process, twiddling thumbs for a day and starting the Reload process and twiddling thumbs for the next two days. The hourly rates are astronomical. Nice job if you can get it.
