    The Lounge question

  • Getting part time MBA degree - is it worth?
    A Arch Stanton

    It is worth it. Being a developer (like me) is great now, but what about in 20 years? You can lay the foundation now for progressing into running a development group (or company) rather than just being in one. OR you will have more flexibility to move within the company. The best part is that you will understand why decisions are made within your company, something that tech-training won't shed any light on. You'll be more valuable to your company since you can make decisions that make sense at a larger scale (good for the company, not just good for me & my friends). Don't go into it for money or contacts. That may have been the idea 20 years ago, but today what you need is *knowledge* and the ability to show skills in several related areas, like software development and MIS. Take a look at the current BusinessWeek and Business2.0 magazines - they both have MBA info. Also, as mentioned, don't bother with any school that is not AACSB accredited. Be prepared for a LOT of school work that is not very difficult conceptually. Compared to CS or engineering it's not too difficult, but is truly much more valuable in day-to-day life. Just my 2 cents since joining my MBA program part-time (about 1/3 thru). E

  • Apple or Not?
    A Arch Stanton

    Absolutely! I run OSX 10.4 at home and I love it. While I'm not against MS (I use and develop for XP everyday at work and find it to be a fine OS) my preference is OSX. Also, with the upcoming switch to Intel, you may see some price drops on PPC-based systems, though probably not for a while yet.

    khan++ had a good suggestion, but drop it here, too. Many people would be interested, especially young programmers who would much rather hone their skills tweaking code from something 'cool' rather than command-line class projects. Plus hardware accelerated libraries will play bigger and bigger roles in computing in general in the future - see OSX and Longhorn UI info - so it would be good to have more info here, even if it is a different library.

    The Lounge question

  • Is C++ going to die ?
    A Arch Stanton

    Look at it this way: We've been trying to kill FORTRAN for decades and though we've tried everything from cyanide in its milkshakes to a gallon of gasoline and a match, it continues to show up in undergrad engineering classes and the dark hallways of companies. Like ants at a picnic or roaches after a nuclear blast, C++, like FORTRAN, will be around long after it has worn out its welcome and its usefulness. We will all see a day when C++, FORTRAN and the like will no longer be an issue for us, and that, my friends, will be the day that our prepaid funeral arrangements will finally be put to good use. Program in whatever you think is fun when doing it as a hobby. ...even if it is a language that garners snickers when seen on a resume or bittersweet memories of that first software job out of college during the Eisenhower administration when mentioned to the elderly. The important thing is that you will be honing your skills as an artist, and this is what will mean something after you've spent 20 minutes learning the syntax of the language du jour. Let's face it, even Latin is still around. E

  • VS.NET Customize Suggestion
    A Arch Stanton

    Just a simple suggestion to anyone on the Visual Studio development team: Perhaps for the next release, you could modify the Tools | Customize... screen (encapsulating Toolbars, Commands, and Options) so that it could be resizeable. I spend a lot of time working between several computers on a single project, typically all with varying screen resolutions and often over a terminal services window. Modifying the layout of toolbars and menus for these various resolutions is incredibly tedious, especially with the 'Commands' menu. Another suggestion: Would it possible to store multiple layouts of toolbars, menu locations, pinned/unpinned status on sliding menus, etc... so that I could have several saved layouts, one for each screen resolution that I use or a for specific group of tools for a specific project? Predefined layouts are not necessary, just the ability to create my own. If there is a way to do either of these things right now, someone please let me know - either would be a great time saver. Elsewise to the VS development team : Keep up the great work! E

    More info. This happens with code behind a Windows Form. When this problem arises, close all of the Windows Forms documents in the IDE and the file is released by whatever is holding it. Seems like a bug... Thanks for the reply, but I don't have FXCop and the above seems to negate 'a'. I'm puzzled.:confused: E

  • obj/<name>.pdb problems
    A Arch Stanton

    Hi gang! I've done some searching but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I have a solution with roughly 30 projects (all C#) in it. Fairly often, perhaps every 5th or 10th debug build, I get errors in 1 to 3 of the projects that say that the /debug/obj/.pdb file is in use and the build couldn't complete. I cannot delete the file without shutting down VS, but once I do and restart, the projects build fine. In using VS.NET 2003 on W2K. Is there something causing this in what I'm doing? Is it an IDE bug? How can I fix it or efficiently circumvent it? I realize that this may not neatly fit into the C# newsgroup topic, but it seemed the best match. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! E
