Could be the memory - 256 isn't much when runnign Visual Studio - but that would be VS hogging all that. Not sure about the laptop and vista. Always worth a try :-)

You serious? I had a 333Mhz PII machine that had 512 MB ram and it ran XP perfectly along with SQL Server and Visual Studio. I had no problems doing video editing (it was slow but that was CPU bound), watching dvds, playing the games of the time, etc. I simply can't belive a machine purchased in 1999 or 2002 could not run XP properly and be useful.

What's your opinion on that game? I'm finding it a bit slow and cumbersome. I mean, fly, target, shoot, wait for turn, wait for turn, hyperspeed, target, shoot, wait for turn... Dunno, maybe I'm missing something.

I felt like that for a while. It took me a while to get used to the control system - since then it's been good fun. I played through on Captain difficulty to the TNG era before I went online to play - I've had some great matches since then - especialy using the defiant (cloak is so cool) and hiding in nebulas to surprise people.

Don't wait - switch ship quickly and attack from a different angle. Or put power to engines and drop speed to 1/4 so you can turn faster. It did take me a while to actually start enjoying this game and I'm guessing it's not for everybody. Plus there are a good few bugs around the entire online experience. What's your gamertag?

Yep - I know what you mean re having someone beside you playing - hence I'm getting a Wii.

No, no, no - but I need to build a credit history so I simply had to spend loads of money on very important things - like consoles and HDTV etc ;)

That's like getting a Ferrari and using regular gas - the performance will suck but it will still work. When you buy a sports car you use proper fuel. When you buy an Xbox 360 (or PS3) you should use proper equipment. By the way - you can plug your 360 into your PC monitor too and get Hi-Def gaming - just so you know (you need the VGA cable - I have one here that I'm not using so if you want it, let me know)

Have to agree with Todd - you're on craic*. I've played around on the Wii a bit and I love the damned thing (will be getting one as soon as they are back in stock at Target) but to say it beats the pants off Xbox 360 games - you MUST be on craic* ;P Was up until 3am this morning playing online Star Trek Legacy and chatting with people while playing and coordinating the defense of space stations. Before that spent about 2 hours playing Viva Piñata (ehhh, it's a really macho game guys - honestly) - one of the most addictive games I've ever played. Games like PGR 3, GoW, The Lord of the Rings BFME II, are just so damn cool when playing alone but when you start going online - simply amazing. Nothing like being in Redmond and racing my brother back in Waterford with the abuse flying left right and centre as he side swipes me on the last bend of a 20 min race in PGR or playing GoW in cooperative mode with a work mate over Xbox Live. You can't get that on a PC (the experience is just not the same - it's just not as integrated) and you can't get it on the Wii. I wasn't a console fan until I got the 360 before Christmas - I was always in the "I can do it on the PC too and it's just as good" boat, but since I've had the 360 I'm a big console fan and I KNOW that it's just not the same on a PC. I have my nice and powerful PC, I have my 360, and I'll be getting my Wii. 360 will be king of those three though - primarily because of Xbox Live. Oh, and I have a nice 32" HDTV which makes the 360 look AMAZING. Seriously though - I personally prefer the online aspect of the 360 over the Wii. Just a personal preference and I completely understand why others are different. *btw, I know you're not on craic :-) Just too much Guinness.

The $3000 in new hardware to get the new look?

Well that is just complete bullshit Marc. I bought a new PC last March which cost me just over €1000 (around US$1240). The graphics card is the lowest spec in the new Nvidia 7000 range and Vista beta 2 and RC 1 run very fast (and AERO is perfect) and in some cases RC 1 is noticably faster than XP was. I also installed Vista Beta 2 on my fairly old Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop (1.5 Ghz Pentium M, 1GB ram, 64mb graphics card) and Vista ran perfectly fine and even with Aero. Haven't installed RC1 on it as the screen is broken. I'm guessing the people that are saying you need to spend loads on hardware simply haven't used it. I can't believe that those who did use Vista could have had such a different experience to myself regarding hardware and Aero.

You'll hate the control panel in vista so! I must say, the new start menu is one of my favourite things about vista. In particular, the run/search box at the end of the start menu is simply amazing. I don't think I've click on the all programs link in months and I never open the classic run box any more. I have two missing molars (one from a slap of a hurley (non-Irish will probably not know what this is) to the face that resulted in lots of damage - the other from lots of damage caused by sweet things). You'll survive perfectly fine with one missing molar... unless of course Aliens land and demand that only those with a full set of teeth live... in which case you'd be screwed.

Damn right... they are basically C# classes with an attribute or two slapped on here and there. Pure simplicity. Single biggest problem with ASP.NET; only allowed one form in a page

That's not correct. It only allows one server-side form... i.e. a form in which ASP specific components (e.g. asp:lable) will be evaluated. You can still have multiple forms and access their values etc on the server as you would normally.

    Paul Watson wrote:

It tries to turn a stateless system (HTTP) into a stateful one.

Well, I agree with you there but it has been a long time since I used a website that was stateful in nature. Almost every website I use these days knows my session, my setup, my configuration etc... all done via cookies. Cookies themselves are a way to get around the stateless nature of the web.

    Paul Watson wrote:

ASP.NET tries to turn a web page into a WinForm. Buttons, events etc

It tries to do that but doesn't force you to. You an still use the normal method but then you are more or less coding static pages. Anyway. Go RoR! hehe :-)

I'd love to see many ASP.NET features but working within standard web conventions. Not trying to make the web like a WinForm.

I could be completely wrong here as I have never used ASP.NET 2.0 but wasn't that one of the major good points of it... it produced standards compliant code. Plus, with the new output renderers (I can't remember if that iscorrect name) that come withwith Atlas (you can also download them separately IIRC) it now does proper things like using CSS for layout instead of tables and so on. As far as I know they have written replacement output renders for all the built in controls and they use CSS etc and standard conventions.
