Now I am even more miffed. At least it wouldn't be prejudice if they took it away from everybody. I'll try another reboot and see what happens. I'm not holding my breath. And I'm definitely not reinstalling Windows.

I found out this little gem of a keyboard shortcut a month ago, Win + Left/Right Arrow. It would dock the active window to the side. It did the same thing as when you drag a window to the side and it fills half the screen. The gem part was it would allow you to dock to the middle half of a dual monitor setup. You could keep pressing the arrow and watch it cycle through all the sides. No more docking one window to the outer edge then moving and setting the width of the other window and then dragging the title bar up to fill the screen. It was like the first time someone used a lighter to start a fire instead of rubbing two sticks together. Life was good. I did an update today and it's all gone. No more Win + any arrow key. All of it. No warning. Just a reboot and nothing. Civilization has been cast back into the dark ages. I guess it's back to rubbing sticks together...

  • Increased RAM, now computer barely runs
    B BRShroyer

I increased the amount of memory in my Dell laptop (Win7 64-bit) from 8GB (2x4GB) to 16GB (2x8GB). Now my processor is always going, there isn't any particular process that stands out as a problem. It seems like all processes are using more CPU cycles proportionally. Here's the long version: When I first put in the memory, Windows would lock up before the login screen. I tried just one of the new sticks. No problem. I took it out and tried the other. Again, no problem. So I put both back in and it still would not boot all the way. I found online someone had turn off the Quick Boot in the BIOS and that fixed their problem. I did that and the computer was able to start Windows completely. However, it is dog slow. The fans are constantly at high speed because the processor is being utilized near 100% nonstop. I let it run for over an hour thinking maybe it was setting up something internally for the new memory. I turned off the laptop, removed one stick and powered it up with the Quick Boot still disabled. It runs perfectly fine. Any clues why I can't use 16GB? I have a 4GB and a 2GB stick that I thought about trying to see if it's just more than 8GB or something else. I'm hesitant because those sticks are the same manufacturer as the two I just bought.

  • Contracting out artwork
    B BRShroyer

When you contract someone to design icons or backgrounds for you, do you normally get to keep the rights to the originals? I haven't contracted someone before and didn't know what the norm was. Thought it might be nice to know a little before going down this road. I know that tattoo artists get the rights to anything they design and put on your arm. I think they do even if it's your idea as long as you do not have a drawing already made that they are copying from. It's considered their original work because it has not been drawn before.

Be prepared for truly knowing what love is. The first time you hold that baby and look at it's helpless, innocent face you will feel overwhelmed with pride, love, and responsibility. That is the only time I felt like I would do anything and everything for someone, that no sacrifice would be too great. After a few weeks of no sleep, the feeling is still there and you realize that's the reason why you are not taking the baby back. My experience has been that babies get better every three months for the first year. I love the 2-3 year stages. I have 4 and #5 is in the oven. The major milestones are: 1. Sleeping through the night (which #4 is going on 2 and still not doing) 2. Crawling (they gain some independence) 3. Walking (they gain even more) 4. Talking is overrated, although the jibberish is cute. They think they've just rattled off a big sentence and are so proud of themselves. Stay away from big purple dinosaurs.

  • So what is inside your spooky drawer?
    B BRShroyer

I had that happen last week. It worked fine here. We sent it to the customer and it didn't work. With the changes I made, there was no way it could have ever worked here. Now the customer is calling saying it doesn't work again. I have a feeling whatever changed when it went to the customer got changed back now. I should put a button on the screen that says "Click here if not working" and have the code toggle between the two ways of running. Now that I brought it up, I just got the eerie feeling that this has probably been done to fix a problem.

  • Switching to Dvorak
    B BRShroyer

I'm trying right now. Have been for the last month. I picked up on the letter locations pretty quickly, but have reached a plateau with my typing speed. It's far from what I type with QEWRTY (try spelling that on a Dvorak keyboard. It's about a third of what I used to do. I'm real close to switching back but keep telling myself that I'll get better or that typing slower allows me to think more about what I'm saying.I haven't found it to be beneficial yet. I even rearranged the keys on my keyboard to help. Windows does make it very easy to switch back and forth. This is just my experience. I think it would have been better to start off on this keyboard 20 years ago instead of proving you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

  • Why should I call you back?
    B BRShroyer

It isn't being bothered that gets me, it's the fact that they called and expect me to call back without any indication I should. Leave a message or text that you need to talk to me. Worse yet is when I call someone for something stupid and they don't answer, then they call back an hour later asking what I wanted. By that time the point is lost.

  • Why should I call you back?
    B BRShroyer

Why is it that if someone calls you on your mobile and you don't/can't answer and they don't leave a message, it is almost expected for you to call them back to see what they wanted anyway? Back in the day, you could call someone on the phone and if they couldn't answer, they had no idea that you had called or what you wanted. If you wanted a call back, you would leave a message. I can't tell you how many times I've been asked "Didn't you see I called?", to which I reply "Yeah".

  • Random Thoughts on Time Travel
    B BRShroyer

I'm guessing if they figured out time travel, then they figured out how to do it properly. Just like we don't crash cars into buildings... well, most of the time. I'm sure there will be some mishaps with time travel also. Maybe the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was really a time machine that miscalculated over the course of 100 million years? The velocity made the impact appear like something a lot larger but slower moving was the cause.

  • MATLAB/Simulink or Mathematica?
    B BRShroyer

MatLab is a lot more powerful, but a lot of the power for your other classes will be toolboxes that cost a couple thousand dollars a piece. From what vague memories I have of college 20 years ago, we used Mathematica for our symbolic math classes (usually the lower level stuff) and Matlab for our real core classes (including all my Control Theory classes). The school switched from Mathematica to Maple while I was there. At one point I had a fully function version with all the toolboxes, but I never used it and got rid of it. Those were my younger, more adventurous days when sailing the seas of the internet tickled my fancy. I thought it would be useful, but I never used it. Now that I am doing some data analysis and need a program like that, I use SciLab [^]. It is free and you don't have to worry about people knocking on your door after you download it from the internet.
