  • Should I start developing for the UWP
    C CAReed

Actually, all Windows 8/8.1 apps should run within the Windows 10. Silverlight is dead; I only mentioned it in that XAML is the basis for all of these platforms. It's XAML that is the future. Remember that JavaScript wasn't exactly a fan-favorite for its first ten years...

  • Should I start developing for the UWP
    C CAReed

UWP is only the first step in the overall direction of full cross-platform development. As with WPF, Windows Universal (Metro) apps, Silverlight, and now UWP, XAML is the cornerstone for developing apps within the Windows universe. Note that Windows 10 is likely the last version of Windows that will exist. The cloud is coming. Still, there will be some form of OS on all of the devices that will exist. As UWP grows, it will be universal with Android and even iOS. While you can do XAML-based apps using Xamarin's tools, UWP will make it more cross-platform compatible so that you can write one code-base that will run on multiple devices from PCs, Macs, iPad, Droid tablets and phones, iPhones, Xbox, HoloLens, etc. Look beyond today as this is really the future.

  • Need cheap Azure Account
    C CAReed

Microsoft Azure is based on a Pay-As-You-Go model, so you provide them with a credit card, and you do something that costs, they will charge you. Give that, if you are looking to work on web development, you can have up to 10 free websites (per region, so that could be a lot, but I haven't tried going beyond 10 yet). The Basic SQL Database would likely cost you about $10 a month, though there is still a free 20-MB database available with one website. Additionally, if you have an MSDN subscription, you get a $50 credit for Pro, $100 for Premium, and $150 for Ultimate. As Premium and Ultimate is becoming Enterprise, I'm not sure what the credits will be (though I suspect $100 Pro and $150 Enterprise). Note that the website does not involve any special setup, configuration, etc. as Azure controls the web server. For just a website, that's fine. If you want to do more, then you can by creating your own web server, maintaining as you wish (but you will also need to pay for it).

  • Why so much mathematics in CS?
    C CAReed

Mathematics is the language of science and logic. Understanding it can make your understanding of the language of programming much easier. As for my own studies, since I hold a bachelor's degree in Mathematical Sciences and a master's degree in Statistics, I would say definitely I learned a lot of math in my studies and it was very instrumental in my learning of programming in general. Granted, my first programming gig was primarily because I was a statistician first and programmer second (I worked for a software house that produced mathematical and statistical libraries).

  • TypeError: $(...).autocomplete is not a function
    C CAReed

In your $.ajax call, change the type to "GET" and remove the data and success parameters. In your .cshtml file, set the method to "get" in your form. You do not need to pass any other data to the autocomplete function except for the form data.

  • encrypt at javascript and descrypt at server side asp.net
    C CAReed

Since the encryption key will be needed by both client and server, how will be able to share the key with both without exposing it to the hacker community at large? The answer is that you cannot, especially since the client will likely have the decryption key (or same key if you're using symmetric encryption) exposed and vulnerable. As Richard suggested, use a hash algorithm instead, so that you can perform the same hashing on the server and then compare the hash values on the server-side. Just do a search for JavaScript hashing functions and use the corresponding algorithm built into .NET.

  • Discontinued Microsoft Tools/platforms
    C CAReed

Actually, in the Page directive for a Web Form page, you can set the AspCompat attribute to true. This provides support for VB6 components within a Web Form. Essentially, you could add a Page directive to an ASP page with AspCompat set to true and your classic ASP runs through the ASP.NET engine once you change the file extension from .asp to .aspx. Granted, this doesn't help in switching over to ASP.NET, but it's a starting point for moving a classic ASP site to ASP.NET. Regardless, classic ASP has not been "discontinued". It is still a viable solution in its own right, at least for the next eight years. Now, if we're talking about discontinued platforms, let's talk about FoxPro....

  • Discontinued Microsoft Tools/platforms
    C CAReed

Just finally reading my email for last week... I'm just curious about this thread: Why are complaining about classic ASP after it had been replaced by ASP.NET twelve years ago? Still, it's still available for use. In fact, it should be available for the next eight years, as its current lifetime is based on the tenth anniversary of Windows 8.

  • What's your favourite 'Worst Film'

Personally, I liked the book because it fit the whole background. Still, the book directly would not have made a good movie (though their body armor would have been cool to see in the movie).

  • Rnd() values are changing everytime in ASP.NET
    C CAReed

As a former programmer of random number generators, I would have to believe that this person has no understanding of one. Yes, he may be wanting to use a seed to generate the same sequence, but since he's not using one means that he doesn't how to use one. This is too funny. It's almost worth the price of admission to Experts Exchange to see the responses.
