IMO there are various degrees of wit. With practise everyone can improve. Yes that may result in a few dud remarks here and there... but even if only 5/10 remarks are highly entertaining (bear in mind eveyone has a different sense of humour), that doesn't mean they should hold back if they have something to say (and potentially lower on the wit-scale). The lounge is a relaxed place.. so any effort to liven the place up is welcome. Have you noticed that wisecracks often promote further conversation or give someone else a set-up for another joke? But I agree with your one point: those with true wit are few, and they probably lean towards a career as a comedian, not programming. :)
