> You don't feel your tax dollars help the USPS to deliver unwanted mail to your door? ACTUALLY, the USPS does not receive a single cent of Federal Funding, i.e. tax money, and has not since Regans first term, where he made the USPS fully self funded. So that argument does not work. (Sorry) /CMH [And in my opinion that is about the only thing that crazy actor did right.. but that is another discussion]

How many of you believe in alien life?]I guess so. It must be totally against their mindsets to try ]and accept a concept that will disagree with their religious ]beliefs. Which is why I hope I am alive when (notice WHEN not 'if') "First Contact" (or whatever you want to call it) happen, just to see the silly religious believes of billions of minions who cannot think for themselves be shattered into equally many billions of pieces. I do not often quote Vladimir Lenin, as I do not think he was correct. But as the Swedish saying translates to "Even a blind hen will find a kernel now and then"...and he did hit the nail on the head with "RELIGION IS THE OPIATE OF THE MASSES" /CMH (ANd yes I have my flame proof protective suit on now)

Buffer overflow attack attempt?Looking at my IIS's logs, I saw the following entry.. How to update a Windows ServicePerhaps this should be in the general .NET forum, but what the heck. I've written a program, in C#, that runs as a service. I have done the installer so it will install the service on the system. However what I cannot figure out (and probably because paying for all this Microsoft software made me so broke I cannot afford the approriate book) is how to handle the case where the service is already installed when setup is being run. The installer will just say "Service is already installed" and rollback the entire installation. What I want to achive is that the executable for the service is updated and the service restarted. I figured maybe I could do a check to see if the service was installed, stop it and then delete it, before the installer installs the new version, but I can't seem to find a method to actually remove a service from the system either. Any pointers would be highly appreciated. /CMH

Stupid @#$()*@#$ MSDEOk, this Microsoft SqlServer Desktop Edition is driving me nuts.. In particular the (lack of) documentation. I installed this tepid pos, then happily downloaded the appropriate SP3, and ran it.. SP3 rudely told me that the SA had no password and I had to assign it one (which I wanted to anyway), and mentioned something about a SAPWD switch. This is when the (not) fun part started. I could not find anyplace where to set the sa password.. Or any documentation on it. Perhaps I am just half blind, and stupid as well and not able to see it, but if anyone can tell me how, or where I can find the information I would highly appreciate it. /CMH

Man arrested for 'peace' T-shirtAs I have said over and over again, there is NO Justice system in the US anymore, it is all a LEGAL system, with no anchoring in or relationship to justice. They should just be freaking honest and rename the Justice Department to the Legal Department.. /CMH

Musical President(With pardons if this is a repost) The Shrubbery in the White House now has its own song....(sung to the melody of "Clap Your Hands") The George Bush song If you're happy and you know it bomb Iraq If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq. If the terrorists are frisky, Pakistan is looking shifty, North Korea is too risky, Bomb Iraq. It's "pre-emptive non-aggression", bomb Iraq. Let's prevent this mass destruction, bomb Iraq. They've got weapons we can't see, And that's good enough for me 'Cos it's all the proof I need, so Bomb Iraq. If you never were elected, bomb Iraq. If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq. If you think Saddam's gone mad, With the weapons that he had, (And he tried to kill your dad), then Bomb Iraq. If your corporate fraud is growing, bomb Iraq. If your ties to it are showing, bomb Iraq. If your politics are sleazy, And hiding that ain't easy, And your manhood's getting queasy, Bomb Iraq. If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq. If we think someone has 'dissed' us, bomb Iraq. So to hell with the inspections, Let's look tough for the elections, Close your mind and take directions, Bomb Iraq. Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq. For our might knows not our borders, bomb Iraq. Disagree? We'll call it treason, Let's make war not love this season, Even if we have no reason, Bomb Iraq.

64 bit Windows 2003 Server does not suppot .NETWith risk of making myself unpopular (what else is new?), I would also like to point out that Sun has had a version of Java (latests JDK as well) out for the 64bit versions of Linux, Solaris AND Windows. Not being able to speak for the Linux and Windows versions, I have to say that the 64bit Solaris version really kicks arse in speed (beleive it or not). /CMH

I have HAD it with BSA / Microsoft> maybe u should take some time and let the dust settle b4 making any rash decisions that have future implications Probably should have, but I am just tired of bullies, no matter where they are, from the school yard all the way to the mega corporations, they are all the same. Besides, I just donated the whole bundle (all of my Micro$oft software) to the local community college (who were very happy to get them). I'll use Microsoft for my own use and development when they stop acting like a schoolyard bully.
-
I have HAD it with BSA / Microsoft> How did this whole mess start? Did you do something to someone? Not as far as I am aware. However SEVERAL people I know of in this area have received the same type of letter. Seems to me like a thinly veiled extortion campaign... I have actually contacted a journalist at the local newspaper here (Seattle Times), although I doubt they would write a story about it, but it sure would be nice if they did.

I have HAD it with BSA / MicrosoftOk, this is it. If there is one thing in this world I hate it is a BULLY!! I received letters from the BSA and Microsoft with thinly veiled threats (since I am taking legal action against them for this, my attorney tells me I cannot post their content), saying that someone had reported the my company has pirated software. Funny thing is, I do NOT have a freaking company (i.e no business license), I do my work as an independant contractor or through consulting companies. NOR is their a single piece of pirated software on any of my computers. I *had* (notice HAD) legal copies of Windows 2000 AS, Exchange 2000, Office XP Developer and Visual Studio .NET.... As for 4 hours ago, I donated every single one (along with reciepts) to a local charity, and now I do not have a single piece of Microsoft software on ANY of my computers. Yes, I think the technology from Microsoft is quiet frankly superior to that of what I am now using (Linux), but I am making a stance against such bully tactics, that makes me start to think of the Mafia. Microsoft is turning into its own worst enemy. I am rewriting the application I was about to release, that was written in C# into either C++ with WxWindows or Java (depends on how my perfomance tests for JDK 1.4.1 comes out), and will NOT develop ANYTHING for Microsoft that I release myself (if a client wants me to do Microsoft, then I will), or atleast not until I get a public apology from Microsoft (yea , and cows might fly). Guess Microsoft has totally forgotten that they grew up and become successful through the small independent developer and is now doing everything they can to irritate them, or to prevent them from being successful (the LUDICRIOUS prices on Visual Studio or Windows 2000 AS are good examples), Ok, so not that posting this is going to do any differance, but I just had to vent (and yes I will keep reading CodeProject, it is far to amusing and valuable not to). GOODBYE MICROSOFT, DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU IN THE ARSE ON THE WAY OUT!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: /CMH

J2EEChristian Graus wrote: Did you know that you pay per *processor* for SQL Server ? Put it in a dual processor box, your price more than doubles. Yes, which is way I am SOOOO thankful that there is the Blessed Company Store... $30 for XP Professional ($20 for upgrade)... $150 for Visual Studio Enterprise Developer edition, etc. etc.

J2EEWell I am seeing more and more large companies go for not necessarily Oracle, but Java on Linux, with either PostGreSQL or MySQL (4.X series). I think that Microsoft is primarily to blame for this actually because they price their products so that most mortals cannot afford them. In this economy, it is not necessarily the best technology that wins (having worked extensively with both Unix/Linux/C++, Windows C++, Windows/.NET/C# and Java on Solaris, Linux and OS-X I have to say that in my opinion, the Microsoft solution in .NET is superior to Java), but the one that can do the job good enough, for the least amount of money. When the bleeding server software from Microsoft, costs more than the hardware it runs on, many businesses see a clear case for going Linux/Java/(PostGreSQL | MySQL) on the server. IMHO

Pilot hot shots...If that picture was real, everone standing on the side of the deck would have been swept into the water by the backdraft from the plane and the turbulence from the engines. That would have ended with several serious injuries if not death, and a certain court martial, and a prolonged stay at Ft. Levenworth Military Prison for the pilot (and most likely the weapons officer as well, as the F14 is a two man airplane) /CMH
