  • How old were you when you first wrote a line of code ?
    C Cj Welborn

I was 10. My mom gave me a book full of BASIC games. The idea was you copy the code, modify it, and learn how to program. I used QBasic because it was already installed in Windows 3.1. I never fully learned BASIC, just the 'basics' you could say. But it did peek my interest, and later on down the road when I saw this thing called 'Visual Basic 3.0', and what I could do with it, I was hooked. I know a couple languages now, and enough about C/C++ to do some damage. If it wasn't for that book I wouldn't know any languages, nor would I care to.

took 7s to boot on my linux laptop. tried creating a file in /home/default using `touch` and it complained of a read-only file system. it's neat though. the commands in /usr/bin seem to work, or they would if you had access.

  • ShowStopper, Work Crippling, High-Priority Bug#1: No Python section in Discussions
    C Cj Welborn

Okay, maybe it's not that serious, and I've probably posted this before, but I can't believe a place like Code Project has no Python section. It's pretty much my 'goto-language', very popular, and a google favorite. Remind me again why there is no Python section? I queried another favorite site of mine about an "embedded code" or "Arduino, ATMega, etc." section and was told that there simply wasn't enough time or man hours to implement it, and that tags would be better suited for this, and I should just tag C projects with the proper "embedded" tag. Is it something like that going on here? I wouldn't know where to start with a "python"-tagged post. There's not even a "Scripting" section, though things like Javascript have a home in "Web Development". I see python-tagged articles, and a few python quick answers in "General Programming" but that doesn't seem right.

I've never used fortran, I always thought of 'i' as an unnamed integer. A throw-away variable.

  • Daily news delivery boy late again?
    C Cj Welborn

The codeproject daily news used to be in my inbox around 5:30am every day, which meant I could read some articles before work. Now it's coming around 1-2:00pm, so I usually have to wait till after work to read it. I realize the world does not revolve around me, I was just wondering if this time-change is permanent, or a mistake. You are ruining my mornings. Just so you know, all code project business should be performed according to my schedule. :)

at least in the early days, it was all really just syntax.

I am experiencing something like this right now. I know about 3 or more languages (depends on what you consider 'knowing' a language). I was given a test in a language I had never attempted to learn before. I had to fix 3 bugs. The first was just strings that are really dates being sorted alphabetically like "1-Feb-2012" coming before "1-Jan-2012". I had to make it sort chronologically. I got the syntax down, found out how the date types work, and I fixed it. The other 2 bugs had nothing to do with the main code language they were using. The template system they use needed to be modified for the second bug. The third bug involved changing an oracle database table to include two more columns, and having their build scripts and code generation tools pick up these two extra values. I fixed 2 out of 3. I felt awesome when I made that brand new language do what I wanted, and then stupid for not knowing nearly enough about the other components that drive their application. I am on a mission now to learn these things, and what you just said really hit home.

uhm, what kind of virus would correctly name your mp3's for you? it looks like you have software automatically managing your mp3's. Like iTunes, WinAmp, etc.

  • Letting the handle go after 5+ years
    C Cj Welborn

When I first started coding I was a child, and then a teenager, and now an adult. Back then I hid behind a handle, and tried to remain as anonymous as possible. The stuff I was doing may have been illegal, some of it was definitely risky and stupid. When I transitioned to writing helpful applications instead of harmful (I didn't write too many viruses but my code harmed more people than it helped), in other words when I became an adult, I dropped the handle. Handles are good for normal kids though, so predators don't know their real names and whatnot, but as an adult I don't worry about things like that. Identity theft is the only threat that I've really thought about when using my real name. I agree with the credibility aspect, and the "time-killing joker" view on handles. I suppose if you were world famous and only known by your handle it would be okay to keep it, but for me personally, it was time to drop it.

Not trying to be a troll or anything, I tried all the layouts. I just don't care for them. I'm glad Code Project took the time to provide different layouts, it's just not what I'm looking for. I think the 'preview' layout is probably the best, but still not it. uhm, again not trying to cause trouble, i am in no way affiliated with any other boards or site (except my own small personal site), but I was thinking of something like DaniWeb's. Not that they invented that style, it's just the only one I can reference right now. Thank you for the suggestions, I won't be talking about this anymore. :) -Cj p.s. - Still love the articles, and will continue to read them every day. (the good ones anyway :P)

I may have posted something similar to this already, but I love Code Project's articles, i read several of them every day. I hate the website though. It looks like a bunch of random posts all grouped together, messy like. I know there is a system to it, but when I first look at the page it just looks like a jumbled mess, this thing where I have to expand a reply, and then expand another reply for one thread sucks. On my phone it really sucks. I like when a thread has its own page, or multiple pages, but that thread isn't mixed with another.

  • Python
    C Cj Welborn

I second that! I am a Visual Basic .Net coder at heart, but since I learned Python a few weeks ago I am loving it more and more. I keep running to my linux-box or even IronPython on my Windows box to crank out my ideas. I used to run to Visual Studio, and I still love it as it's my best known language, but I'm so intrigued by python and what I can do with it. Please add a python forum, and I promise I will come back here more often. Right now I'm using DaniWeb a lot because they already have a Python forum.
