That's the hole through which you look at the thing you're trying to take a picture of. Most modern compact cameras only have LCDs on the back to check what you're shooting and to review what you've shot. Mine has an additional miniature LCD with a hood over it to act like a view finder.

Depends on what you want your camera for. For example, I like taking pictures of night views of cities. Shutter speed control and self timer comes in handy. ...and a tripod as well... If you want to take pictures of people, automatic facial recognition is probably a good thing... probably...
