  • 100th Anniversary of the birth of COBOL's creator
    D Dr No

A look below the surface of the computer world uncovers some very old technology - such as the Cobol programming language. The COmmon Business Oriented Language was created in 1959 and, though it is no longer taught in schools and universities, Wow, I was born in 1959. My company still uses cobol for a lot of things, despite it has been declared dead many times.

I am not on this project, btw. It is not that I didn't help in the past. I did and got slapped in the face (not literally). So it is time for a change.

"Well, needless to day I have made several enemies at work (who hasn't?). I don't get along with a project lead recently. He is working on a major release. I know he is overlooking some important things on this project and it is likely the release will be a failure. But I don't want to tell him. In the past he has been very ungrateful and annoying. Anything I say could be taken the wrong way. I am sick and tired of helping others to solve hard problems and not getting any recgnition afterwards." Now I am waiting for your 1 votes. But ask yourself first: have you done or thought of doing such things?

  • 401k, IRS, and common sense
    D Dr No

For those who work and live in the USA, I was told by my company that IRS has a regulation saying that if you make more than $85k (say $85001), then your pretax 401k contribution is limited to %6 of your salary, otherwise you can contribute 15% up to a limit (of $11000?). So you could get "punished" for making that extra $1. Is this true? If it is, I am seriously think about requesting a pay-cut of 2 dollars and 5 cents :(

There are three possibilities: 1. It's an illusion. :(( 2. VMTU really rocks. :) 3. You were bribed by Colin to post this message. :( No matter what, there will be a lot more people trying out VMTU. I would love to have that illusion everyday (don't take #3 seriously, just my pool sense of humor).

  • Where Is The Time To Study !
    D Dr No

Days In A Year = 365 Sundays = 52 Days Sundays Are Meant For Rest Yes, sundays are meant for rest. However, about the half the time when you really want to rest you can't. So you might as well spent the 26 days studying! Extra days for study = 26 Days Left = 313 Days Summer Vacations = 60 Days Weather Is Very Hot, So It Is Difficult To Study Come on, you don't have money to spend your vacation in any decent place, nor do you have the company of a beautiful lady. So why bother wasting these 60 days, use them to study instead. Extra days for study = 86 Days Left = 253 Days 8 Hours Of Daily Sleep = 122 Days Sleep Is Necessary Days Left = 131 Have you heard of "sleep learning"? You could have learned some boring foreign languages using only half of your sleep time. Extra days for study = 147 1 Hour Daily For Play = 15 Days Its Good For Health Did you learn the alphabet while playing with toys? These 15 days can all be counted as study, all you have to do is choose the right toys. Extra days for study = 162 Days Left = 116 Days 2 Hours Daily For Food = 30 Days Chew The Food Properly Don't Care For Time Research shows that chewing food is an activity that can be done while studying. Almost 90% of research papers have food stains on them. Extra days for study = 192 Days Left = 86 Days Examination Days In A Year = 30 Days Giving Exams Is Necessary Days Left = 56 Days Winter Vocations = 25 Days Weather Is Cold Its Difficult To Study Days Left = 31 Days Other Holidays = 20 Days These Holidays Are To Enjoy Days Left = 11 Days Illness At least Once A Year = 8 Days Becoz Of Illness Study Is Difficult Days Left = 3 Days Result Days = 3 Days Going And Taking Result Is Necessary Days Left =0 Days I am sure you can easily find another 108 days in the above. So now you will have a total of 300 days each year for study. Note that these are all 24 hour days (we already considered the sleeping and eating factors). ;P ;P
