Would it make sense to add a layer between the unmanaged c++ and the C# that is a managed c++ app that would translate to a seralized type? Changing the server to serve managed data only serves to force all clients to be managed code. If you have the freedom to add a second port on the server that provides the go between interface, then your server/client interfaces could look like the following: Server Port x binary structure comm Port y managed structure comm Managed client connects to port y Unmanaged client connects to port x The application on port y could be a small stub that locally connects and translates the data to/from port x.

I will recommend that you don't worry about optimization until you finish your application. Then you should profile your application and check which part(s) of code needs to be tweaked. This way you will save lots of time trying to optimized things which doesn't matter. -Saurabh

Why not just try the 90-day trial? That should give you plenty of time to evaluate it and see if there are any issues. Or else try one of the Express products. OTOH, if you're not planning to use any of the new stuff and you're not using, e.g., WPF, then there's not much point. Oh, I just spotted that your company already has 2008. In that case just get one or two developers to install it and play with it for a bit - or run it in a virtual machine. Kevin

Hello Glenn, There is no way to programmatically change the currently selected field in a Microsoft DateTimePicker. There is no notion of default field either. The first time the user goes on this dtp, the minutes field is selected. If he leaves the field after selecting the seconds field, when coming back to the dtp, the seconds will be selected and the updown field will act on this field. Its a handle. Used like a pointer for pointing to managed objects on the managed heap. Its pretty fundamental to writing managed code with C++/CLI.
