What quantity qualifies as that? At least ammo and guns aren't out of stock in the UK. In fact you've reminded me I need to get some more 58gr .243 (now that is an awesome round for foxing).

If you're talking about making your own rounds (bullets are the bit that get fired out and you'd need to mould those) then that's complete poppy-cock since you've always been able to do it in the UK. It's done quite commonly over here particularly in the target shooting world.

You want to be careful about that. I heard a beautiful definition of working class vs. middle class. Working class - has a TV that's too big for their house Middle class - have a big enough house to fit said TV in

I'm going a bit the opposite way - just about to graduate as an engineer and while I do enjoy it I do love to get my hands dirty (so to speak) working on the "truck" (in my case a 1983 Series III Land Rover and a Defender 110). Although having to replace the leaking water pump p-gasket on the 110 in sub-zero temperatures in a rush was interesting to say the least. Never had a lift but at least been blessed with plenty of jacks (that work). Got a couple of trolley ones although most are slightly off-kilter since Dad used them to move an arctic trailer around the barn. Always have my trusty Hi-Lift should push come to shove...

A little compromise would be useful. The crucial point about a 4x4 which you seem to have forgotten is that all four wheels are powered - distributing the power over a larger area and therefore providing slightly less of an opportunity to slide. The major problem is that people (certainly over here in Britain) don't know how to drive in slippery conditions. The other one is that these SUVs that people are on about aren't proper off-roaders (assuming that's what you mean by 4x4). I mean this one[^] doesn't even have 4 wheel drive FFS. 4x4s are more useless than other vehicles if people don't engage the 2nd axle (if it's an option unlike on some). All I can say is that around me in Wales last year the only vehicles capable of getting up the road were 4x4s (driven properly I might add). And that was just a thin layer of ice but they did go up some steep inclines.

How bad is it going to have to be before I need low ratios, or to start locking the diffs?

It shouldn't ever get to that stage, on roads anyway. Low range (at least on things like Land Rovers and Shoguns) typically have far too much torque for driving in these conditions. If you are in low-range you'll want to be using third at a minimum. Similarly diff locks will help but should be un-needed, I find it far quicker and simpler to cadence brake rather than engaging the lock. In fact I don't think I've ever engaged it, even around the farm.

Don't know what the fuss is all about really, it's fun out there!

I agree, shame about all the other road-users though. First of all they all think (well around London anyway) that because there's a bit of snow on the ground that they don't have to obey traffic laws. I've just spent 6 hours going from Chelsea to Bisley to lock up some guns for the winter (it should have taken me 2h in "normal" traffic conditions and should have easily done it in 3h today). Pet peeves of the day were: On a three-lane carriageway there were only two lanes (which is fair enough since they divided it equally and best to keep people further apart) but why do you insist on doing 10mph in both lanes and not pull over to let people who can past. Someone broke down (or something) near the M25 exit and someone else pulled over (looked like a friend) to assist - now why did you park next to the other car rather than in-front or behind it? A 50th edition Defender and myself ended up going off-roading on a dual-carriageway to pass them. Followed quickly by an arctic and several other cars. Boy racers - need I say anymore. Drivers of Mercedes 4x4s (well one in particular). The last stretch of road to my destination was effectively sheet-ice all the way and as I was going around a corner this out of control M-Class came around the corner sideways (obviously been attempting to stick to the speed limit at 50mph) and luckily missed the back of the 110 by about an inch. Another one in an estate of some form came up to a junction [I was waiting at the lights to turn left] (on the same road in the same conditions) at a normal pace and then started braking late, the first I saw of it was it coming to rest with the passengers forehead about 6 inches from the steel bumper on the front of my vehicle... I agree it's fun but I'd prefer to drive around West Wal

Having played with a friends Desire HD (I have a Desire) the Desire HD is massive. Albeit it has a great screen but it's still huge for a phone.

One thing that really bugged me - thought the phone had screwed up - is Winamp has an automount SD card option, which meant that while I was in the car, I couldn't charge and play music at the same time. Disabled it and now when it's plugged into a charge-only device it doesn't dismount the SD card. Other than that the latest version's pretty good. Like the lock-screen option - similar to the HTC player.

    E Ed Poore

Not on the Desire. If I plug it into a USB host (as opposed to a charging device) it asks whether I want to Sync, Mount, Charge or something else (I forget which). When you select mount the PC recognises it straight away - there's no separate mount option.

    E Ed Poore

Well I do run a 2.5L 16ft long 4x4. Might cost a bit more to run but then again servicing costs are nothing, repair costs are nothing and initial purchase price was cheap considering the vehicle you get for it.

Hmmm, trying to decide whether you're being sarcastic or not... While there are a few aspects of a Defender's design that could be rectified on the whole it does the job it was initially created for very well. Afterall, the basic design hasn't changed from 1948 so something must have been done right...
