I wrote a small WTL application to illustrate the crypto functions. I also transform the encrypted string to a Base64 for transmittal across the internet. G Gene OK

I'm happy to hear you had a good vacation. All of the names you mentioned brought back memories from my boyhood in the deep south. Gatlinburg can be a lot of fun. I used to go fishing and crabbing in Apalachicola. Providence Canyon is astounding. The canyon really grew during the Great Depression in the 1920'2 and 1930's. "ranging from nothing special to absolutely brilliant!" - Yes, that sums up the deep south, not just Country Buffet! :-D Great to hear from you. Gene

  • Yer cannae change the laws of physics, Jim!
    G Gene OK

Newtonian and Maxwellian mechanics don't work so well on small particles, like electrons. Quantum Mechanics doesn't work so well in the macro world we perceive with our senses. Heisenberg's uncertainty principle works well with small particles like electrons, but has no meaning when we are talking about a futbol. When you speak of the laws of physics, it usually depends on the size of the universe you are considering. We don't really have a unified theory that explains all things. The holy grail being the unified force theory. So, to answer your question, Newtonian laws apply to a futbol (or baseball), but Quantum physics applies to the atoms that make up the matter in the ball. And nuclear physics will hurt your head. Nuclear physics and Microsoft(R) Vista(R) should be avoided in order to have a nice day.

  • The glory of Vista
    G Gene OK

Every time my son powers down his laptop, we have to fiddle with it for about 30 minutes to get the wireless connection working again when we turn the power on. It's not that it doesn't connect to the router, it just seems to come up in "local connection" mode with no internet access. I discovered last night that if I did not touch anything, the computer would right itself after about 20 minutes of oscillating between "local" and "internet" mode. The moral is, do not touch Vista and you will see a 33.33334% performance improvement.

  • Basic Computer Literacy
    G Gene OK

Generally, I would say your plans are far too advanced. You should start with: 1. Where the power cord plugs into the wall. 2. Where the power cord plugs into the computer. 3. The "power on" switch for the monitor is not the same as powering on the computer. 4. How to correctly operate the "power on" switch for the computer. 5. Avoiding the use of coffee mugs near keyboards and mice. 6. Remembering to power on the monitor after you realized the computer lights are on, but there is no video display. 7. Understanding that the printer must be turned on before it will print. 8. This one is important: Do not use the battery backup unit as a foot stool. 8a. Be prepared to jump back when a cord gets kicked loose! 9. Do not rest legs on network cable stretched between computer and wall. 9a. #9 is particularly useful when you've just started a long running network operation. This is my personal list. I know it is accurate and functional. I write software, I do not write hardware. I consult it several times a day for my own personal use.

Except that the VS2008 Feature Pack[^] is all about C++ and MFC in particular. C++ still makes up about 60% of the material on MSDN.

  • What do YOU think of MSDN?
    G Gene OK

My opinion of MSDN is minimal. I'm at the point where reading C++ header files is usually as productive and occasionally not as frustrating as reading MSDN articles. I really appreciate the bad/omitted coverage of exception handling in the c++ examples (often accompanied parenthetically with the statement "error handling omitted for brevity"). It makes the code that everyone cuts and pastes into their own projects a lot smaller and less robust, but much easier to understand... :omg:
