Need a new word mean "it worked first time and that's crazy because I just wrote the code in one hit and just compiled and ran it" -
we do it not because it is easy, but because it is hard"trying to find a company to work for that was willing to take risks " Now that seems to me like a bit of introspection is in order. The statement to me reads something like this "I am disappointed that there are no companies out there willing to go out on a limb whilst still offering me a risk free salary" To me there seems to be something fundamentally wrong with that statement, I just can't place my finger on it ....

Volunteer Development WorkThe other side..... You need to ensure that you pick the right organization if you are going to work for free. There needs to be someone that will appreciate what you do and deliver what you need (design guidelines, requirements etc). If you do not have this you will do a lot of work and then be stuck with complaints. Even worse, a lot of work done that will not be used. If you have appreciation for you time and a willingness to participate then it can be a pleasure. In my opinion it is always better to get some cash upfront to ensure that everybody is committed. This needs to be amount that is felt. A non profit may not be able to pay $ 5000 but they can pay $ 500 and it will feel the same to them as the $ 5000 to larger company. Make clear this is $ 5000 worth of work for $ 500 and you should be fine, with benefits for all. Remember, if they are not willing to pay one cent then in general your work and time is worth less than one cent to them.

Intel XDKWell.... There is not enough clear documentation on Intel XDK and I reckon this post will probably rank sooner or later for Intel XDK. You might find a few requests for an article on Intel XDK :-) A sample on how to build and deploy a basic app with Intel XDK would be great. I know that writing a decent article takes a lot of time but it will be well appreciated.

Intel XDKHi Pete, Thanks for your reply. I was just looking for a general impression. I am looking to develop a phone app next year and this seemed like a good environment to do it in if you want to native. So, there is no specific question at this stage, when the time comes one would just need to dive in and play with it till you get it right. But, knowing sure you do not dive into some crappy tool helps. Thanks, Gideon

WPFSo, the definition of dead would be something like this: "There is no doubt that if we the .NET community declare WPF end of life ..." A declaration by the .NET community ... Hmmm, I wonder who died to make him Queen of the community with the power to declare WPF dead. Can he also please declare IE6 dead.

Killed at LaunchHmmm .... I thought that was a bit cheap, especially given that the first guy qouted 10K, was not able to deliver in 16 months, and intended to use Joomla. If you are going to use Joomla then 2mil sound just about right.

I'm so glad I avoided having that tattooper·son·al Adjective Of, affecting, or belonging to a particular person rather than to anyone else. This is my tattoo. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My tattoo, without me, is useless. Without my tattoo, I am useless. I must show my tattoo to be true. I must have a tattoo meaner than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must tattoo me before he shoots me. I will... - Personal and yet in your face

I'm so glad I avoided having that tattooI guess each person will have to work that out for themselves as tattoos are personal. You seem to have reached your own conclusion? "I'm so glad I avoided having that tattoo

Killed at LaunchKilled This has been bothering me: "This project was a typical e-commerce site with one significance difference: the site hosted multiple stores (under a single domain), with a similar look and feel for each. The stores were managed individually, but offered products for sale through a common shopping cart." "The original quote my new client had recieved from their vendor was a measly $10,000 (a website of this magnitude typically costs in the range of $75-100K). When all was said and done, the final cost jumped to over $25,000." Is this correct? $75 - 100K for this? What would you charge?

How many ways are there to do things in code?@ryanb31 There are only 10 types of people in the world Funny :) A 0 and a 1 are standing next to each other in a binary string. The O notices a '.' next to it and exclaims "Hey what is this!?". The 1 replies; "Don't worry, we are in a joke, it is a bit sh*t"

Solo developer rant"I am confident I can get the application done for them and have it perform well but not in the time allowed" You need to clearly communicate this. If your initial time estimate was wrong then apologize and move along. You are the supposed expert. As such do not ask, tell. '"it would be great if we could do that", blah, blah, blah'. Tell them they can have it but this will move the time frame by a month. Give them clear options, eg, we can do X but the outcomes would be Y and Z. Alternatively we can do A with outcomes Y and Q. Clear communication is the key here. If you are getting bullsh*t requirements then say so. Insist on getting the basic application functioning well first and then add additional features. Have a clear plan on how you are going to build the application and then stick to your guns. Simply point out that them controlling the development process did not work out previously and if they are going to keep on making changes and breathing down your neck for unrealistic deadlines this attempt will go the same way as the others. "Complex requirements and convoluted business logic that are difficult to provide a nice solution for." You can not cry about this one :-) To reduce this to simple logic is your job as the developer. If you can not do this then you are the 'code monkey' and need to get hold of a developer. Harsh, but true.
